Dangerous Intersection
Editor, Times-Union:The intersection of County Farm Road and CR 300S has killed five people in three years. John Droke and Meredith Sensibaugh were killed there on Feb. 12, 1999. There were two more teens killed there on Labor Day weekend of 2001, Frank Pineda and Olivin Canales.
And now, on Feb. 11, 2002; Carol Munson, a beloved bus driver was killed at this same intersection. There's already a house on the corner that obstructs everyone's view, plus there's a little hill that cars just seem to pop up over and if you're not careful, you'll get hit, too. So what does this say about when the corn starts growing? It's even more dangerous and more people will be hurt or possibly even killed. Something needs to be done about this. Don't you think five different people's family and friends are hurting every day? We don't need anymore people going through this pain because something wasn't done about this situation. I think a four-way stop sign would be the best thing that could be done. I'm not only writing this because I loved Carol and was close to her, but I'm also writing this for the family and friends of John, Meredith, Frank, Olivin, Carol and anyone else that's been hurt at this intersection. Something needs to be done.

Silver Lake School
Editor, Times-Union:It disturbs me to no end that the board members do not want to fix our school. But yet they can complain and stir things up with out a care of what it does to people. The board members and Dr. Harman have put us the people of Silver Lake and the students through a lot of pain and heartache. Then they leave the door open for some other board members to do the same thing because you won't invest anything in us. Why won't you invest in Silver Lake School or our children? Are we not good enough? Are our children not important enough?
Mr. Brail, you e-mailed me after the November board meeting (without my permission) and said some things about by my demeanor at that meeting. Take a good look at the demeanor of the board members, the way some of you people present yourselves. Then you proceeded to tell me what was wrong with our school. I have enclosed your letter to the editor so he knows I am quoting you.
Mr. Brail stated, "Current federal law does not make handicapped accessibility a local option; we must comply with the law." I have agreed on this many times. So why are you not fighting to get this done? I personally think we should be upgraded so all children can go to our school or parents, grandparents, siblings all family members can come and see their children at a play, game or just to visit without having to worry about the stairs.
Mr. Brail also stated, "He (meaning Dr. Harman) and the board members are committed to providing every student, including those in Silver Lake, with the best education possible." So what you are telling me/us is that the best education possible for the students of Silver Lake is to have absolutely no money for renovations and to break a federal law because you won't upgrade us.
Education versus athletic facilities: I do not mind getting some new facility whether it is for athletes or performing arts. My children may use it one day. I do, however, think the cost is outrageous. Children are student athletes, not athlete students. By going for new and better buildings and stadiums you are telling these children that their athletic ability is far more important than their education. What about money for the other teams that are not doing with athletics, but doing with the knowledge that these children have learned?
Some of that money could be used to pay for tutors for children who cannot pass portions or all of the ISTEP test. I can tell you most if not all of those who struggle with ISTEP need extra help and it should be started early on. Education is and should be the most important thing in our children's lives. Children and teens have so much to worry about. If they are struggling in school they have a tendency to give up. So why not help them? Put some of that money into tutors and stop sending them to summer school for the ISTEP. Wouldn't a year of extra tutors help more than a few weeks in summer school?
Think about the way you are presenting yourselves to these children and teenagers. What you are telling them about their education, about what is more important.?

Ham Radio
Editor, Times-Union:As a Boy Scout trained in emergency preparedness and ham radio I am excited about the part ham radio is taking in the new Emergency Operations Center being placed in the new Justice Building.
Since we never know when a natural disaster will happen, I am sure glad this project is being completed.

CR 450E
Editor, Times-Union:After reading the letter of Mrs. Carolyn M. Stafford, I feel there needs to be a clarification on the closing of CR 450E. I also know farmer friends and non-farmer friends who use the road and would like the road to remain open.
But the railroad is planning on closing the crossing and upgrading the Wooster crossing with lights and gates.
So the closing of the road would be to not inconvenience anyone who is unfamiliar with the railroad crossing being closed, that the road no longer comes out on Highway 30.
As long as the railroad crossing is open, so will CR 450E be open.

Editor, Times-Union:I think Cargill of Mentone should be thanked for flying a large United States flag from the highest part of their building.
It can be seen day or night when approaching Mentone from any direction.
One night after dark when I was west bound on CR 200S approaching State Road 19, I glanced to the south and there it was flying in all its glory for all to see. What a sight to behold!
Thanks again, Cargill!
