Altered Perception

Editor, Times-Union:
On Friday morning an ice storm canceled school. This gave me time to complete my mission. This teacher was going to hand deliver my vehement opinions of past Potpourri columns to the desk of the Times-Union's managing editor. As I stepped out of the elevator, Mr. Gary Gerard's eyes and mine met. His eyes were friendly - almost mischievous. Mine were glaring. I tried to use the look I had given many a school child over the years; you know, the one that says "You have been a bad boy!" We shook hands and I informed him he was a good man, but I also thought I was an equally good and dedicated teacher. Gary accepted my letter.

Thirty minutes later, back at school, a colleague pointed out syntax errors in my editorial. My first and only thought was "Oh, is Mr. Gerard going to have fun with this." (After all, I had signed my letter "Teacher of Children and Educator of Editors"). With sweaty palms and racing heart, I called Mr. Gerard. He had already noticed my errors and gave me his word that he would correct them. As our conversation continued, I came to learn that he and I seemed to agree on many educational issues as well as others.

Gary - After reading this past Saturday's Potpourri, I've started to have second thoughts. Potpourri seemed larger and it was center page. It appeared devoid of subliminal messages and opinions and every storyline contained good news about people doing good things in our community and surrounding areas. I'm sure it lifted the spirits of those mentioned, and perhaps will inspire others. I now believe Potpourri could be great for our community, if it consistently followed Saturday's format. Being positive is powerful! If I knew the contributors' names, I would write them a thank you.

Oh yeah ... one other thing ... the colleague that pointed out my syntax errors on my first editorial was Eisenhower's custodian, Chuck Orlando. I thought you would enjoy knowing this.

Thanks for the Learn'n'.

Gasoline Prices

Editor, Times-Union:
In response to Bryan Keim's gas prices; I totally agree with him, something should be done about the higher gas prices, maybe a nationwide boycott. But O-God forbid, that the people of our great country get the state, local and federal governments to save them any money. They always have their hands out, wanting more, and trying to figure out ways to get it. Why should they sue someone that is making them more money. Every time someone buys a gallon of gas, that's just more money in their pockets in taxes. They are not in the business of saving people money, they are in business of taking people's money. Have a nice day.

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are for people over the age of 70.5 years old. Unlike other distributions, which are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow for a tax-free distribution from an IRA, provided that the distribution goes directly to a qualified charity.
