Winona Alcohol

Editor, Times-Union:
The February 20th Times-Union stated under Legal Notices that application has been made for a dealership in beer, wine and liquor at 2302 E. Winona Ave., just within the Winona Lake town limits.

We certainly do not need or welcome another outlet for alcoholic beverages in our community, particularly as this will be in the nature of a packaged dealership, which means bringing these drinks into homes in Winona Lake and environs.

It is noted that a hearing on this application will be held at the County Courthouse, Commissioner's Room, third floor on Thursday March 1st at 2 p.m. It is hoped by us and other concerned individuals that those not in favor of granting this license be in attendance.

This is a predominantly conservative Christian community and part of our heritage, going back to the early 1900s, was that the world renowned evangelist Billy Sunday was so vehemently opposed to alcoholic drinks and the effects on him in his early days and then on his fellow Americans.

We have personally made Winona Lake our home for over 14 years since our retirement in 1986 and would not want to see its reputation spoiled.

No Restrictions

Editor, Times-Union:
Attaboy Mike Snipes! You tell 'em we don't need or want the kind of restrictions on society proposed by those do-gooders like GW and Gerard. What's wrong with kids listening to lyrics like "I'm going to blankety-blank slit your girlfriend's throat while I'm raping your blankety-blank mother." If do-gooder parents don't want their kids hearing music like that they should keep them at home all the time!

I know what you mean about that cutting out pages of your book. I had to tear out about all the pages of that Holy Bible - it was so restrictive on my lifestyle.

And what you said about us possibly not needing the Bill of Rights - Right on! Why do we even need the Constitution! In fact we've just got too blankety-blank many laws period! Speed laws, for instance, sure put a crimp in my free spirit on the highway. In fact, why prohibit ANYTHING we personally feel is all right! Isn't Right Vs. Wrong relative?

You've got my vote, Mr. Snipes, for induction into the Society to put Censorship Under aa Moratorium.

Good Job NLSA

Editor, Times-Union:
Hearty applause goes to Brian Smith and the other individuals who comprise the Northern Lakes Skating Association for their initiative and hard work in providing a wholesome place for people to spend their time. Applause also to their supporters - the Kiwanis and Optimist clubs.

Watching my granddaughters ice skate this winter reminded me of some of the happiest times in my youth. I grew up in a small town in central Michigan where the city provided us with an outside skating rink. It was held at the fairgrounds and music to skate by was heard over the loudspeakers. A large hot house with benches was open in which to warm up, tighten skate laces or enjoy some hot chocolate with friends.

In conclusion, I would like to say, "Keep up the good work, NLSA!"

Miracles

Editor, Times-Union:
Oral and Richard Roberts, who have often been greatly maligned and ridiculed for their beliefs, claim that, just as in Bible times, there are still miracles performed on Earth today, and I quite agree with them. They also state that you have to "give" to "get," which I also find to be true.

Now the skeptics and the atheists don't believe in miracles, but take it from me, miracles do happen! They have happened to me! Furthermore, disbeliever, kindly refrain from thinking that a miracle is nothing more than a mere coincidence! I know that isn't true. And how do I know? Whenever I experienced a miracle, I just simply knew and felt that it was a miracle, and that it could be nothing else.

Then there's the question of "giving." Give, but do not give with the idea that just because you gave, you are going to immediately receive something in return. Don't keep peeking around the corner to see if a "recompense" (reward) is in sight. The minute you give, forget about it. Your reward will come in due time.

It's amazing what true, sincere faith and prayer can do, but you can't look up to God and say, "Give me this or that," and expect to get it. However, if you say, "God help me to work toward attaining what I want," if you keep the faith and deeply believe and pray for what you want - if it's the right thing - you shall receive exactly what you pray for.

Again, in reference to miracles, just because a miracle hasn't as yet happened to you, that doesn't mean the whole idea is a complete impossibility. Furthermore, miracles arrive at the most inopportune and unexpected moments in life. That's why they are referred to as miracles, and every living mortal is accessible to them. Now who is responsible for creating miracles? Why, I believe that it is a "Higher Power" who is responsible for creating miracles. In other words, in this day of atheism, pessimism and paganism, I am not ashamed to profess my belief that it is "God" and "Jesus Christ" who perform miracles.
