Man Of The Year
Editor, Times-Union:Receiving the Man of the Year award for 2003 was an unexpected surprise, and although there are several persons as deserving, or more deserving of this prize, I am honored to be so chosen.
It is rewarding to be part of a community which offers so many opportunities for service. My thanks to you and your people for co-sponsoring this event.

It's interesting that up until about 150 years ago, America's laws defined the black man or woman as three-fifths of a person. Because blacks were not considered persons, America's laws protected the white male who chose to own and even kill his black slaves.
Today the unborn isn't given status of personhood, and therefor the white and black liberal woman is protected by America's laws to "own" and to even kill her unborn baby.
How hypocritical of the liberal woman who despises the white male who owned and killed his black slave without being punished by law, and yet acts just like him. What makes her think that she can "own" another person?
How blind she is to the fact that the person in her womb belongs not to her but to God - and that she is designed to be the caretaker and nourisher of the little one.
Remember, the white male justified his actions simply by taking away from the black person the God-given status of personhood. Also remember, back then they would mock those who insisted that black people were fully human.
Pro-lifers are mocked the same way today as we lift up our voices for the unborn person in the womb.

Hogan Trust
Editor, Times-Union:The Hogan family wishes to thank the hundreds of friends who have expressed in many ways their grief, loss and appreciation upon the passing of our beloved Chuck Hogan. Chuck was one of a kind, and he will be missed by those who were touched by his unique personality and love and commitment to this community. We who are fortunate to share his name and his life are very grateful for the outpouring of support that we have received this week. This truly is a loving and caring community, and we know that Chuck's love of the people here is reflected in the hearts of the people who knew and loved him.
Many people have expressed an interest in helping Chuck's family and passing on his legacy I suggest that the best way to do this is with a contribution to the Daniel and Mikel Hogan Education Trust. Dan is a senior at Ball State, majoring in social work. Mikel is a fifth-grader at Eisenhower. Chuck's death has made it difficult to ensure their education, and this trust is established to help provide the funds needed for their future. Contributions can be sent to:

Proud Of Guard Service
Editor, Times-Union:In regards to a recent article in the USA Today, dated Feb. 5, section 4A, titled "Backhanded Compliment," Sen. John Kerry, interviewed by Fox News, slams President Bush's service in the Air National Guard and compares it to Vietnam draft-dodging. He further connects the Guard with avoiding the draft, going to Canada and being a conscientious objector.
I find this comparison very offensive, as I served 18-1/2 years in the Army National Guard and two years in the Marine Corps with a tour in Vietnam. During my Guard service I know at least 50 percent of the members were either prior service or combat veterans, many as highly decorated as the senator. Knowing some of them personally, I've never heard them brag like John Kerry has. As history shows from the past to the present, the Guard always has had a vital role in our national security, especially with our recent Guard deployments to the Middle East. Not all have joined the Guard to get out of combat. In the article with his picture and his medals, the caption reads, "Paid His Dues." Well, Mr. Kerry, the president has paid his dues and so has the Guard.
Thanks to all the armed forces and the Guard, I have the freedom to vote and you can bet he won't get mine!
