Hospital Sale
Editor, Times-Union:Recent sales of local businesses to large corporate entities has me somewhat concerned. In light of the most recent sale of our community-funded hospital to the infamous Quorum Corporation, this must certainly be on a lot of people's minds. Most often these transactions are purported to represent an increase in quality of services, but the reality is usually exactly the opposite.
Take Kroger's for instance, not only do most of my favorite brands begin to disappear but the quality of what remains begins to go downhill as well.
However my beef is primarily with National City. The first signs of trouble was the initial software upgrade which required the tellers to record not only the amount of the checks cashed but also the exact amount of 20's, 10's, 5's, etc., down to the penny, making every transaction take a substantially longer amount of time.
Then I noticed that they seemed a little short staffed, especially on Friday afternoons, evident by the waiting line that almost went out the door to the sidewalk. Being a patient person this too did not entirely discourage me from going to this particular branch.
Then came the assault upon my visual senses that made me realize that this corporation has no sense of the cultural whatsoever. They took down the sculpture that had been sitting out on the lawn since I was a child. I could deal with the removal of the bulletin board, I could deal with with the cheesy Nat. City posters plastered all over the lobby, including on top of the lovely framed prints of old houses. But this is nothing short of cultural terrorism.
My thanks and condolences to the ladies who still work at this particular branch, their patience and endurance has been nothing short of heroic.
National City hear me out. Please back off on your slick, contrived, beautiful people-modeling agency marketing campaign. Your ads are enough to make me puke. We know you're here and there's nothing we can do about it. If you want to generate some business, try spending a little of that advertising budget on a few more tellers.

Evolution
Editor, Times-Union:The purpose of this letter is to reiterate the concerns I expressed over the phone yesterday morning regarding the teaching of evolution theory as fact in Mrs. Beck's 2nd period class.
There is simply no conclusive evidence to prove any of the many theories of evolution. Mrs. Beck presented as fact mere opinion, and students who expressed their disagreement were openly ridiculed. Furthermore, Mrs. Beck tried to defend her position by arguing to the students that belief in God and evolution are compatible. The students were then forced to tolerate a one-sided misrepresentation of the earth's origin, i.e., protoplanet. Finally, they were given assignments designed to reinforce Mrs. Beck's beliefs. The students had no choice but to comply for the sake of their grades.
This situation is intolerable. It is not a case of science vs. religion, but one of religion vs. religion. If you are an atheist, or a communist for example, or if you believe that a woman has the right to abortion on demand, then evolution is your theology. It is the only belief system (religion) that supports your philosophy.
This situation is also complex. Students and taxpayers deserve better than textbooks full of fads, passed off as facts. Parents deserve to be reasonably sure that their families' religious convictions are not under attack when they send their children to our local school. Our community deserves schools with credible teachers, textbooks and administrators. Credibility is especially important. Most students will quickly see the futility of attending a class/school and not believing the teacher. Either apathy or anarchy is likely to ensue and discipline problems occur. Then what? Parents get the blame.
This situation is also avoidable. There is no reason to teach evolution at all. If it must be taught, it should be taught in a comparative religion class as the neo-paganism it is or science fiction. And if there isn't enough information available to teach earth science factually, cancel the class.
As a Catholic wife and mother, it is my solemn responsibility to teach my children about truth which is embodied in the true Faith. In this day and age, a great deal of that effort is spent exposing what is contrary to the truth and their faith. It is a constant battle and takes consistent vigilance when books for even young children are tainted with evolution propaganda. If there are parents who want their children to believe any of the evolution theories, it is their responsibility to teach it. They won't have any problem finding material!

House Fire
Editor, Times-Union:Last month our house caught on fire and we learned first-hand something about the heart of our community.
First, the fire department did a phenomenal job. It would have been easy to destroy our house in the process of putting out the fire. Instead, they responded professionally and with care. They kept the water on the outside of the house and off our wood floors! They kept our roof intact and limited the demolition to just what was necessary to find the fire in our walls. Thank you, Warsaw Fire Department.
While all of this was going on, the First Brethren Church across the street offered generous help as well as neighbors up and down our street. Martin Garber and Steve Divine, from New Horizon Community Church, came over and helped us clean up and made it very easy for us to continue our normal activities. Warsaw is a great place to live!

Man Of The Year
Editor, Times-Union:On behalf of myself and my family, I would like to thank WRSW, Times-Union and the Warsaw/Kosciusko County Chamber of Commerce who selected me as the Man of the Year. Coming from the large city of Indianapolis to Warsaw was a dream come true. To walk down the street and actually have people speak to you and call you by name is very unique in this day and age.
I was taught to give before I could receive and to treat others as I would like to be treated. The community has done so much for me, it is only natural to want to give back to it.
Again, I thank you, and congratulations to Judy Reneker, Woman of the Year.
