Red Light Running

Editor, Times-Union:
Light at Lake City Highway and Anchorage Road:

Several weeks ago, I took a few (10?) seconds before I pulled out on U.S. 30. If I would not have done this, I would now be in our local cemetery.

This semi tractor-trailer was doing at least 65 mph, when his red light was already on red and the green light was on my side.

When I was a truck company manager for Short Line Express in Fort Wayne, and either a "LTL" or "T-L" driver would run a stop light at any speed, and I found out about it, I would immediately fire my driver.

$60,000 is far too much to pay for just one camera. We as taxpayers should insist on a bidding program. I am sure that one could find the best of these cameras in Germany, where they have been in use for 40-50 years. I have been in Germany and our friends have told me this.

Akron Improvements

Editor, Times-Union:
On behalf of the students and staff of Akron Elementary School, I would like to thank the taxpayers of the Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. for the many improvements made to the school during the Guaranteed Energy Savings Project recently completed by American Energy Conservation Inc. The new heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems have made a wonderful difference in the climate of our school. Early in the school year, when the weather was very warm, the air conditioning provided an improved learning environment in which children and adults were able maintain their focus, energy and enthusiasm throughout the entire school day. A noticeable increase in the amount of fresh air circulating throughout the building provides a healthier environment for everyone.

The new energy efficient windows installed in eight of our classrooms and several other areas will provide important energy savings. The stucco exterior that now accompanies the windows has added to the school's appearance. The new interior lighting promises to reduce energy costs while providing a brighter and fresher learning environment. The added exterior lighting makes our parking and walking areas safer and more secure.

Improvements made in upgrading the school's electrical system for technology and the installation of additional electrical outlets in our classrooms allow us to provide the kinds of learning experiences needed for children of the 21st century.

Renovations made to the restrooms in our kindergarten wing have made these areas accessible to the handicapped and serviceable for the very young children who use them.

I would especially like to commend the staff members of Akron Elementary School for their cooperation throughout the completion of the project. Extra efforts were required on the part of many individuals, especially our custodians, without whom we could not have completed the project as expediently and efficiently as we did.

American Energy Conservation Inc. and their contractors were a pleasure to work with. They were cooperative, communicative and provided a quality project.

We consider ourselves fortunate to serve the children of a school corporation that takes pride in its schools and makes providing a quality learning environment for students and staff a priority.

Samaritan

Editor, Times-Union:
I want to let the people of Warsaw know that we have a very good Samaritan in our town.

He is Harold Van Cleve. My husband isn't well and occasionally I need some time to unwind. I called him last week and he came yesterday so I could get away.

I thank him each time, but I'm not sure he knows how much I really do appreciate him.

Thank you again, Harold.
