Column Appreciated

Editor, Times-Union:
I am writing in response to Deb Hobbs' letter criticizing Mr. Gerard. I read many columnists and I think Mr. Gerard is an excellent writer. I look forward to his column every Saturday. Saturday's column about the weather was very funny. I have often told friends that he should be syndicated as he is better than many national writers.

The "cheese with your whine" line was cute, but it was not original as it was used by Dr. Phil in O Magazine this past summer. At least Mr. Gerard doesn't plagiarize.

Keep up the good work, Mr. Gerard - you are appreciated by many.

Silver Lake School

Editor, Times-Union:
Silver Lake may have won its crusade to keep its school open. The present consensus of the Warsaw Board of Trustees is to keep the status quo in Silver Lake. This means that the Silver Lake Elementary School will not be closed at this time, but there is no guarantee how long it will remain open. The Board's proposal for Silver Lake states, "It appears that there is consensus to keep the school open and in good working condition until such time as facility needs or financial constraints require that the issue be re-examined." The Board is proposing not to spend any additional monies at this time to bring Silver Lake School into educational equity with other corporation schools. In fact, for the year 2002, the current budget for the Silver Lake building is $3,000.

Silver Lake residents are not begrudging the fact that the Board has recommended spending $30 million on outdoor and indoor recreational facilities (football, softball and soccer fields and wrestling facilities) and on the performing arts for the high school students. Silver Lake students will someday attend the high school and benefit from these facilities. The Board has, however, identified through two separate studies where the Silver Lake building falls short in offering Silver Lake students the same educational opportunities as those provided in other Warsaw schools. The Save Our School (SOS) Committee provided a report and drawings done by an architect that demonstrated accessibility and equity could be achieved for $3.5 million, yet the Board members still refuse to take a proactive approach to remedy the situation.

The Board spent a lot of time in the public work sessions informing the public that spending a proposed $41 million on projects (now reduced to $30 million) would not increase the tax rate and that the current time is the best time to get a bond issued because of low interest rates. Why is the present a good time to obtain money for recreational facilities at the high school but not for educational equity at Silver Lake? Why does the Silver Lake issue get put on the back burner time after time?

Our children were ecstatic when told that the school would not be closed. The SOS Committee is grateful that the school will remain open but we are not na•ve enough to believe that we won't be right back where we started in a year or two - with a new board attempting to decide what to do with the Silver Lake School. The SOS Committee urges the Board to allocate funds now through the proposed bond to provide Silver Lake Elementary with the educational equity that it deserves and to make a commitment to keep the school open.

Trashy People

Editor, Times-Union:
This letter is to all the people, and you know who you are, that think it's all right to just dump your trash on the side of the road. Instead of causing an eyesore for everyone, decent people pay the small fee to take trash to the landfill. Let me just give some examples of the goodies left by my house on 350 South recently. About a month or so ago there was a couch along with miscellaneous garbage! A week ago, a couch and a chair. All of this has been picked up and disposed of by someone not as TRASHY as yourselves! Just last night I came upon a old barbecue grill, tires and other junk! I'm sure whoever is responsible for these acts is not man or woman enough to go back and pick up their junk, much less refrain from doing it in the future. I hope someday I can catch you TRASHY people in the act and turn you in to local authorities. I would take great pleasure in watching you pick up trash left by others for eight hours a day while doing community service!
