IHSAA Is A Good Organization
Editor, Times-Union:This letter is in response of the editor's comments about the
Indiana High School Athletic Association in the recent Indianapolis Star.
The reason that attendance is down in the larger cities is due, in part, to cross-boundaries. I know a lot of people may not agree with this, but if you look at the basketball games attended in cities like South Bend, Gary, Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Terre Haute, Evansville and the Jeffersonville/New Albany area, there is no community backing because the student athletics are not all in the school district. A lot of what is happening now was only stirred up because the IHSAA went to class basketball in Indiana. You never heard anything about this while there was one class in Indiana for basketball.
If you look at the schools that have community backing, their gyms are packed. Also, if you look at the other state associations across the United States, few if any are making money. The schools in the IHSAA make money.
Last year at the boys state finals, played at the RCA Dome, the schools split $19,412 and in the girls state finals, played at Market Square Arena, the schools split $19,622. So you can see schools do make money in the state tourneys. I noted in a Louisville paper that their football state finals have to be moved to a new site because of the conditions of the playing field. The IHSAA gets the best stadiums in Indiana to hold their state finals. I back the IHSAA 100 percent in what they are doing for the student athletes across Indiana.
To the state lawmakers across Indiana, please leave the running of the athletics to the IHSAA, there is no tax money used to run the athletic programs in Indiana.
Also I have a message for the media across Indiana, get out to an athletic event (not just basketball), you may see some amazing student athletics in action.
I know of one radio station in northern Indiana that, by the time basketball season is over, will have broadcast over 180 basketball games for both boys and girls. They also do sports reports of the schools they cover in the mornings and afternoons. I know of no other radio station that can come close to that number.
I hope this letter will help inform the people and the media across the state of Indiana, that Indiana's high school athletics are in good hands with the IHSAA. Come watch all your athletics in action, you may be surprised.

Marsh Trip
Editor, Times-Union:I would like to publicly thank Marsh Superstores for the free trip to Washington D.C. I really enjoyed the trip that they put on for the "Back to School" essay winners. I flew on an airplane for my first time. I got to see most of the memorials, some museums and the Capitol.
I would like to thank our congressman, Steve Buyer, who got me tickets to the White House tour. I had a tour guide and I didn't have to wait out in the cold.
I got to see the Library of Congress, there was a lot of marble in that building. I saw the Gutenburg Bible, the first book printed on a printing press.
I really like the American History Museum. It had the shoes that Judy Garland wore for the dancing parts in the "Wizard of Oz." I also like the Hope Diamond.
My mom and I saw the children's section of the Holocaust Museum, called "Daniel's Story."
My favorite part of the trip was the dance on Saturday night. I taught my brothers some of the dances. I met a lot of people and made a few friends.
Thank you very much, I had a good time.

Restaurant Owners
Say ThanksEditor, Times-Union:
For the last nine years, my wife, Theresa, and I have owned and operated the McDonald's Restaurant in the Wal-Mart Plaza here in Warsaw. We have decided to pursue other interests effective Feb. 1, but wanted to say "Thank you" to all of our customers and employees that have made the last nine years such a pleasure.
When we were provided the opportunity to purchase this restaurant back in January 1991, we had a simple goal: to make it the best McDonald's around! Many of our customers have told us that we succeeded and for that we are truly grateful. For any customers that we disappointed, we sincerely apologize. I can assure you that it wasn't from lack of effort.
The restaurant industry is a challenging one. Our success was only possible because of our loyal and dedicated managers and crew whose commitment to making our McDonald's special never wavered. These folks are like our family and we will be eternally grateful to them. In my 31-year association with McDonald's, I have never seen such fine people as I was blessed to have in Warsaw.
So, to all of our customers and employees, thank you and may God bless you richly.
