Glad Or Sad?

Editor, Times-Union:
When God looks at me, at you, what do we think he thinks? Is he glad or sad?

There is a Bible verse (Romans 8:26) which reads that God's spirit pleads for us with yearnings which cannot be described.

Now go and look at his son, Jesus, hanging on the cross, crucified for your sins and mine, to make the way to Heaven a possibility for you and me. In less than a month, Feb. 13, we enter the Lenten season, which leads us to Jesus on the cross and then on to Easter.

I can think of nothing more awful than not having the hope and promise and strength that this conveys to us, God's creatures. Yet if our belief is that there is nothing to believe in, or living a life as if there is nothing to believe in, we must make God's heart very sad. Think of it, not acknowledging God who created each of us, not aware of a loving heavenly father whom Jesus revealed.

This is aetheism, which is that some blind force is in charge. No sense at all in things; no meaning in the universe, and no loving heart behind it all. This is awful! We do not matter! At last, we just go, snuffed out, like a candle and our life ends and body decays.

This is not true! Behind this universe is God who cares much, and groans in his love for you and me, and yearns to receive our faith, our love and our obedience in return for giving us life and its gifts.

A man from Indonesia, Richard, wrote in my devotional book, which was written before the tsunami devastation, "I lived by reason and logic many years, holding God at a distance. I didn't think following God was logical. Christ kept nudging me until I finally surrendered to him. ... This isn't logical, but Christ will put in us his mind and heart. Only he can do it. As we walk with Christ, we discover the wonderful life God wants for us." And God is glad in his heart. If Richard is alive now, after tsunami, or not, he is with God in Heaven, as Jesus promised.

How is the heart of God toward us? Glad? Sad? He has done all he can for you and me, through Jesus.

Hunting Controversy

Editor, Times-Union:
I read Mr. Hyden's letters to the editor concerning the controversy about the hunting preserve near Pierceton, and he makes it clear that he finds writing letters containing false and/or misleading information to be "offensive and appalling." In his second letter he states he finds himself "once again, correcting information" from other writers. I am writing to correct information Mr. Hyden included in his letter.

Mr. Hyden writes of an incident in which he states that the neighboring landowners attempted to harass what they thought were two bow hunters by sending a child to the property line on a noisy motorbike. He then states that the "hunters" were "cameramen" making a video of the deer and instead "filmed the whole incident."

The fact is that the two men in the tree stand were hunters, one being my son. Armed with a bow and a video camera, their intention was to have my son film the other man "harvest" a deer to make a promotional video.

The reason a deer was not shot that day, according to my son, was that they did not see a deer of the proper caliber.

When my son told me of the incident and his part in it, I questioned him further about what exactly had gone on. I was not happy with my son's involvement in this conflict. I asked why they couldn't have put the tree stand somewhere farther away from the houses and avoided interaction of this kind with the neighbors. I had not been to that area before and took a drive by to try to understand what was going on. I was surprised to see that the high fences were located up to and around the yards of homes in that area.

Hunting Preserve

Editor, Times-Union:
First of all, I have no problems with anyone raising deer even though the state seems to have an abundance of the creature.

Secondly, I do not agree morally with the thought of adults "hunting" creatures who cannot escape (i.e., canned hunting); but if they can do so with clear conscience, hey, it's a free country, right?

Thirdly, no farmer I know allows their livestock to run around loose in the field and then lets strangers come in and shoot at them right beside neighbors' property. That is the big difference between farming and canned hunting.

Additionally, for Miss Rhoades to imply that these neighbors are "unaware of where meat comes from" is very insulting. I guess if there's 40 (or less?) acres for sale beside your property (or anyone in the country, for that matter), anyone can set up a deer/elk "business." After all, it's just the same as farming, right? Of course, it's no problem if your family is outside in the yard less than 25 feet from this activity - or is there?

Finally, obviously the Times-Union only wants to interview one side of this situation. How about telling the rest of the story from these concerned neighbors? This hunting is occurring right across the road, beside driveways and back yards to these neighbors without benefit of so much as one foot of buffer zone from the fence rows, animals and hunters 365 days a year now since there is no set season on the elk. Would you feel safe if this was your back yard? This "controlled" environment is not safe near housing as long as any firearm is concerned and should be stopped before someone is hurt or killed!

Concerned citizens of Kosciusko County, please write to your legislators so that regulations can be established as soon as possible or this same situation could happen in your back yard!

Editor, Times-Union:
Re: "Permitted Use" of agriculture-zoned property given to the property at 150S and Robinson Lake Road by a "staff" decision and upheld by the Board of Zoning Appeals.

Do you live next to property zoned for agriculture? How long will it be before the same thing happens next to where you live?

Having allowed this once, as far as we know, how can they tell the next applicants "no"? Are there other "canned shooting" places in Kosciusko County?

Will it be OK if it occurs next to where BZA members live?

Contact your legislators about banning "canned shooting" of captive deer and elk in our state.

Other states have banned it as well as three provinces in Canada.

We can, too.
