Important Step

Editor, Times-Union:
ISTEP, what an important step for a sophomore. Every sophomore wants to pass this test the first time. Not only does just the idea of taking this test make some students very nervous, it was going on when our country was in turmoil and emotions were very high (9-11). The state of Indiana has decided that "some" of our sophomores who failed should be allowed to take it again in the spring, believing that these events affected them enough that they didn't pass. Now normally it is not offered to any sophomore again in the spring. Each individual school corporation gets to set the guidelines on who can take this test again and who can't.

As a parent of a student who isn't going to be allowed to retake the test in the spring, let me explain just how this makes my teen feel! 1. That he wasn't as affected as the others by 9-11. 2. That since his score was not as high as some that failed, he is dumb and has no chance of passing it in the spring anyway, so why even let him try!

OK, that is only a couple of things. The list could go on and on. I as a parent am very upset at what is going on and hope that this letter will inform our community about what is going on. My son struggles in math and should be allowed every opportunity there is to take this test. He also qualifies for extra help in math and our state gives our school money for each child who qualifies for this help.

A few weeks into the school I made many calls to our school to try and get someone to help him and explain some of his algebra to him. I finally made some arrangements to get this extra help by dropping accounting and getting him a study hall so someone could come give him the help. Two weeks later no one has shown up in study to help him so we put him back in accounting. I gave up trying to get this help because it was obvious to me he wasn't going to get it! So maybe just maybe it is our high school who is failing to educate the kids and get this test passed the first time! This is one Tippecanoe Valley parent who is very upset!

Connections

Editor, Times-Union:
I'm so glad that some of you people are beginning to realize how phony Kosciusko County is. Greed and connections are the name of the game.

If one does not have connections, it is even difficult to get a seat in a public restroom.
