Lawshe Responds

Editor, Times-Union:
I feel compelled to respond to the column concerning my request for a new police chief.

Let me begin by stating that I harbor no ill feelings toward the chief of police or any Warsaw police officer. We have many admirable and devoted public servants. The comment I made was nothing more than frustration, with respect to how much monies the WPD spends comparative to Warsaw's population. As councilman at large, representing the taxpayers of the city of Warsaw, it is my sworn duty to question and inquire about every expense (be it $50, $5,000 or $50,000) regarding the taxpayers hard-earned monies.

The comments regarding my dislike for the Warsaw Police Department are misunderstood because I have questioned the WPD's spending procedures and operating expenses in the past (i.e., personal police vehicles). We have 36 personal police vehicles and 35 police officers for a city of 12,000. The funding for some of the above was obtained with federal grants for only a certain amount of time. Need I ask who will pay after those grants are expended (YOU). Most recently, the city of Warsaw was asked to consider funding for an ERT SWAT team. What will this cost?

The city of Warsaw is in need of prudent spending and operating practices now. This will allow us to address serious issues such as a new sewage plant, improved streets, alleys and other infrastructure to attract more industry so desperately needed.

The City Council's responsibilities require prudent planning, fiscal restraints and common concerns for the taxpayers of the city of Warsaw. I realize that I have chosen to deal with more sensitive issues and have an uphill battle to create change. However, I feel that I have a responsibility to all of Warsaw to make sure your tax dollars are spent wisely and for the good of everyone.

Be assured that I will always, to the best of my ability, work with the honorable Mayor Wiggins and the City Council members to see that your tax dollars are spent wisely and judiciously at all times.

Attack On Liberty

Editor, Times-Union:
They say curiosity killed the cat. Well, it didn't kill me this time but I'm very sure it took at least five years off my life expectancy. I almost never watch TV but the other evening I was rewinding a tape and just flipping through the channels while I waited when a so-called public service announcement caught my attention. It concerned children being killed by firearms, so out of curiosity I called the number on the screen.

Today I received their pamphlet and it's a good thing I have a strong heart. Now I'm not saying it's all bad. They have many good ideas, but when it gets to firearms, which it does a lot, it's so full of lies and perversions that even the U.S. Department of Justice has had to put a disclaimer in it. For example: Studies show that a firearm in the home is more than 40 times as likely to hurt or kill a family member as to stop a crime." A statement made by the Brady Bunch which has been disproven by every responsible study ever done.

There are 16 pages in this thing and virtually every page has some such garbage. Not long ago Handgun Control Incorporated made a statement claiming they are not really anti-gun. Well, even though HCI is not listed in this pamphlet as a resource, it reads as though they wrote it, and the first paragraph of page 14 says it all. "Insist that local laws or regulations require that confiscated or surrendered weapons be melted down rather than auctioned off or sold to dealers."

If you are one of those that feel the Second Amendment issue is over, maybe you should call 800-We-Prevent to obtain a copy of this attack on liberty. But please, not if you have heart or blood pressure problems. We lost Sonny Bono the other day and we simply can't afford to lose any more supporters.

Good Law

Editor, Times-Union:
Senator Kent Adams' proposed law to permit seizure and confiscation of the drunk driver's vehicle is long overdue. For too long law-abiding citizens have been injured and killed due to sharing the highway with them.

This is an issue on which the members of our churches should show firm support and thereby let the liquor industry know of their stance.
