Christmas Display
Editor, Times-Union:I would like to commend all of the people in the Warsaw Parks Department for the beautiful Christmas lights in Central Park.
It was done with taste and respect for the real reason we celebrate Christmas. The dedication and commitment to this display further confirms the reasons Warsaw is truly a blue ribbon community and a great place to live.
To all who were involved in the project: Thank You.

Republican Control
Editor, Times-Union:Ref: Opinion Page of Times-Union on 12/28/00, the cartoon of "The Real Clinton Legacy," showing Republican control of our government.
This reminded me of a front-page graph of several weeks ago that verified the Republican control of our government from 1923-1930. Let's hope the Republican control doesn't repeat 1929.

Election Idea
Editor, Times-Union:After 40-plus years as an election poll worker and the 2000 presidential election fiasco, I have a suggestion to improve the process. Eliminate the Electoral College; that might have been a good idea in 1776, but not for the 21st century. However, there is one idea from 1776 that could be used for today's presidential elections - the paper ballot. This election is for a national office, therefore the government should provide identical paper ballots for every precinct in the USA. The ballot would list each candidate preceded by a box for the voter's X. Following the candidates would be another box with the statement "None of the above." The paper ballot advantages: NO butterfly ballots, NO dimpled ballots, NO chads of any kind, NO mind reading to determine the voter's intent, NO question who the voter voted for, NO reason why the voter could not identify the candidate he or she is voting for, NO reason to throw out black voters' votes (who can tell a white person's X from a black person's?), NO lawyers needed (unless some evidence of fraud), NO State Supreme Court help needed, NO U.S. Supreme Court help needed, NO need of recount (every ballot is counted by a minimum of four poll workers and at least two or more times. All votes cast must balance out with all persons who signed the poll sheet of registered voters.)
The only extra equipment needed for paper ballots is one cheap no-eraser pencil attached to the voting booth. Using the pencils every four years, they should last from 100 to 1,000 years.
As long as man makes machines, they will malfunction. (Why do makers of equipment insist you buy a service contract?) If God made a machine it would be perfect and you could count on its accuracy! Some food for thought.

CR 350W Opposition
Editor, Times-Union:The county commissioners need to listen very closely to those of us who live on CR 350W between old and new U.S. 30. If they approve the proposed widening of 350W to better accommodate semi traffic they will be making a dangerous mistake. This road is already heavily traveled by both cars and large trucks as the back way into Warsaw. The sheriff does not patrol this area enough and the 30 mph is ignored with many vehicles traveling at speeds over 50 mph in front of my house. By improving the quality of this road it will become even more hazardous for the local residents and the Warsaw and Tippecanoe Valley school buses that pick up our children. Semi and heavy trucks should be prohibited from using this road and forced to use Ind. 15 which was widened for trucks to get through Warsaw more easily.
Traffic during the summer has also greatly increased because of the CCAC. Isn't it odd that the county commissioners won't help fund the CCAC but they might increase traffic on 350W by making it the best route to the CCAC for out-of-towners. 350W is a county road, not a state highway. This is a residential area and I am tired of having my windows vibrate every time a semi roars down this road. My home was built in 1968 when the Chinworth Estates subdivision was starting to be built and 350W was a quiet county road. I believe the houses were there before the semis made this their main route into Donnelley and the industrial park.
If the commissioners are so worried about using all the federal money available to widen 350W, I suggest they pitch a tent in my front yard for two weeks and enjoy the sights and sounds. Maybe then they would decide not to do this project and tell the Washington bureaucrats "no thank you" and ask them to cut my taxes instead.
The commissioners need to prohibit semis and heavy truck traffic on 350W. If they really want a bypass they should extend and improve 500W, where they would not affect any residential areas.
