NORTH MANCHESTER - Leota L. Furnas, 79, of North Manchester, died at 6:03 a.m. Jan. 4, 2008, at Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester.

She was born Nov. 24, 1928, in Huntington County, to Ores and Hazel McBride Freds. On March 3, 1948, she married Walter Allen Furnas, who died Nov. 2, 1992.

A graduate of East Rock Creek High School in 1946, she worked for several years at Manchester College and Peabody Retirement Community in food service. She was a member of North Manchester Missionary Church.

She enjoyed her family, friends and gardening. She was a valued member of the prayer chain at her church.

Survivors include two sons, Don (and spouse Lorene) Furnas, Warsaw, and David (and spouse Virginia) Furnas, Spencer, N.C.; two daughters, Bonnie (and spouse Jim) Hackworth, North Manchester, and Sharon (and spouse Frank) Shumaker, Columbia City; a brother, Charles Freds, Marshall, Mich.; eight grandchildren; four step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and a sister.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, with Pastor Dan Binkley officiating. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.

Calling is from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
