MENTONE - Leonard A. Smith, 83, of 303 N. Franklin St., Mentone, died at 9:09 p.m. Dec. 2, 2007, in Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne.

He was born Oct. 27, 1924, in Kosciusko County, to Alpheus and Myrtle Brown Smith.

A lifetime Mentone area resident, he worked his entire life, retiring at the age of 80. He delivered fuel for Igo Oil; worked at and was part owner of Frank & Jerry's Grocery, Mentone, for a while; was part owner and worked at Etna Green Bar; and most recently worked at Medtronic Manufacturing, Warsaw. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He graduated in 1943 from Mentone High School, where he played basketball. He was a former member of American Legion. He enjoyed going out for breakfast with Roy Jeffers and loved playing cards.

Surviving are three sons: Devon Smith, Rochester; Leon (and spouse Sandra) Smith, Prairie Grove, Ark.; and Ivory (and spouse Judy) Snipes, Warsaw; a sister, Delta Smelser, Mentone; two brothers, Frank (and spouse Jerry) Smith and Marion (and spouse Eva) Smith, both of Mentone; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna and Donnas, and five brothers, Floyd, Roy, George, Garlan and Estel Smith.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at King Memorial Home, Mentone, with the Rev. Doris Smith officiating. Burial will be in Mentone Cemetery with military honors by members of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Warsaw.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
