SOUTH WHITLEY - Whitko played host to the Leo Lions Friday night in a rematch of last year's sectional game. Leo ran by the Wildcats 33-7.

Leo drew first blood in the game. The Whitko defense held Leo on a fourth down play to take possession of the football on their 8-yard line. On the next play Leo's Lance Carey caught the fumble in the air and ran the eight yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead after the kick.

Whitko's offense was held to five yards in the first quarter. The Leo defense continually put pressure on the front line and were often in the backfield

"We just didn't play well tonight. We were audibleizing on plays when we shouldn't have. We were just out of sync," Whitko coach Bryan Sprunger said.

Leo ate up the clock with a sustained drive beginning at the end of the first quarter. Justin Woods of Leo ran for a three-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 14-0.

Whitko began to have some success against the Lions defense in the first quarter. On the first drive Leo intercepted a Casey Boggs pass.

Leo drove down the field and scored again on an 8-yard scamper by Alex Baer with 3:10 left in the half. The extra point put Leo up 21-0.

"Leo did just what we expected them to do and that was to run the football at us. They have us on size and the just had continued success on the ground," Sprunger said.

On Whitko's next drive Boggs hit Kaleb Swender for a 55-yard pass play to give the Wildcats a first down at the Leo 18-yard line. On the next play Boggs threw an interception at the 13-yard line. Jarred Roberts returned the interception 87 yards for a touchdown and a 27-0 halftime lead.

"We had too many turnovers tonight. We just give up touchdowns like we did. Those two defensive touchdowns by Leo hurt us. We also had too many penalties tonight that didn't help," Sprunger said.

The Whitko defense came out fighting at the start of the second half. The Wildcats forced Leo to punt after five plays to put a little life into the Wildcats. After the punt Whitko began a drive that ended with a fumble after gaining momentum.

After the Wildcat defense made the Lions punt, the Whitko offense began to click. A three-play drive capped by a 42-yard touchdown by Boggs to Trent Roland down the right side line. Doru Aldea kicked the extra point to trim the lead to 27-7.

The touchdown was the only score for the Wildcats.

The Lion defense pressured Boggs to throw the football early. Whitko could not put together any more drives. Boggs threw for 143 yards on 7-of-20 passing for the game.

Leo capped the scoring on a 20-yard run by Woods.

Tyler Elder led Whitko in rushing yards. He gained 54 yards on 11 carries. Matt Strandlund added 33 yards to the cause on nine attempts..

"We are going to go back to work on Monday and work on our game. I feel as though we took steps backward from last week. We will get better," Sprunger said.

Whitko fell to 0-2 overall and will play host to Southwood Friday night.
