Leesburg Tabs Carter As Clerk-Treasurer

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

LEESBURG - Jan Carter has been doing the job for the past few weeks, now she is officially the clerk-treasurer in Leesburg.

At a caucus Thursday night in the Leesburg Town Hall, Carter was chosen by Precinct Committeeman Harold Jones as the town's new clerk-treasurer. Barbara Freel also put her name in the running for the position, and offered to assist Carter in any way she could.

"I applied for this position because I believe in this town," Carter said as she addressed the members of the public who attended the caucus. "I think (the town) is primed for a change, and I would like to be part of this change."

Carter said she knows the town has hurdles to overcome, and said she understands what it takes to do the clerk-treasurer's job.

"If chosen I will do what's best for the community," Carter said.

Freel said she was looking for a way to be more involved in the community.

"It's time more people get involved in the community, to step up and get involved," said Freel. "I want to try to make things better for everyone. There's quite a mess to clean up."

Freel then added that if the board agreed, she would be willing to work with Carter to help get things in order.

"There is a lot to be done," Freel said. "Jan and I can work together and learn together if you will allow us to do that."

Former clerk-treasurer Melissa Robinson submitted a letter of resignation April 12.

Carter has served as interim clerk-treasurer since April 19 when Council President Rick Stookey named her to the position. At that time Carter was volunteering her time to help keep the town's finances in order until the position was filled.

Leesburg's first meeting with Carter, Stookey and new board members Thomas Moore and Doug Jones will be Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Leesburg Town Hall.[[In-content Ad]]
