Leesburg Sewer Plans Progress

Monday night at the Leesburg Town Council meeting, a representative from GRW, the engineering firm working on the project, said things were moving along well, and the project is getting close to the stage where bids will be taken.[[In-content Ad]]Plans and specifications for the project have been reviewed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development. Once four minor questions are answered by GRW, the project should be able to proceed.
Rural Development will meet with council members today to finalize some paperwork. The town received a $3,208,000 low-interest loan from Rural Development to construct the new sewer system.
The town also received a $500,000 grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs to offset some costs of the sewer project. The town was notified in December that it received the grant.
The town hopes to advertise for construction bids in February, receive bids in mid- to late March, and close on the Rural Development loans in mid- to late May.
Construction on the sewer project could begin in mid- to late May. The construction phase of the project should take eight to 10 months.
In other business, the council:
n Gave Town Clerk Melissa Robinson permission to check with the historical society to see if there are funds available to help repair brick streets. The town also will look into grant options to fix the brick streets.
n Decided to continue with the current trash company this year. Bids will be taken for the service in the fall.
Leesburg Town Council members are Rick Stookey, president; Ryan Robinson and Jay Weaver. Town clerk is Melissa Robinson, and street commissioner is Ed Riordan.
