A Leesburg man was booked into county jail after allegedly firing a handgun in a Barbee Lake neighborhood.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Dept. deputies responded to the area of the Jot ’Em Down convenience store near Barbee Lake after being dispatched at 3:02 p.m. of a “shots fired” call.

North Webster deputy marshal Dave May spotted a vehicle matching the 911 description in the area of 4057 Sullivan Road near CR 700E.

As other officers arrived, they arrested Wes Allen Kern, 25, of 4057 Sullivan Road, Leesburg.

During interviews with detectives, two other witnesses stated that Kern had previously fired a handgun out the window of a vehicle near the Jot ’Em Down convenience store at 3774 N. Barbee Road.

Detectives were able to locate and secure a handgun at Kern’s residence, as well as a corresponding spent shell casing from inside the vehicle.  Kern was charged with criminal recklessness with a firearm.

He was held on a $2,000 bond.

Unrelated to the gun incident, Brooks Lee Kuhl, 29, stepbrother to Kern, was located at the same residence and found to have two outstanding warrants through Kosciusko County for his arrest.

Kuhl was arrested for felony theft and driving while suspended, and also held on a $2,000 bond.[[In-content Ad]]
