Leesburg Discusses Equipment Purchases

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

LEESBURG – The Leesburg Town Council met briefly Monday evening and approved a few items on their agenda.
It agreed to purchase a new chainsaw and considered some new equipment for the town.
Street Commissioner Brandon Queen said the chainsaw he currently uses is 13 years old, and he said he was concerned with the possibilities of it malfunctioning.
“It has some time on it,” Queen said.
He brought a few quotes to the board, and it was decided to purchase a new 20-inch chainsaw from Greenmart Equipment, formerly Gilsinger’s, for $419.
The board also discussed the options for a new street sweeper. One concern with the current front loader used for street sweeping is that it is very dusty when it is being used. A water attachment has been added recently to combat the dust issue, and it has been effective, but the board is still considering purchasing a new machine or trading for something similar. Board president Tom Moore said for financial reasons, there is not a whole lot that can be done right now.
One issue that was brought to the board’s attention is debris that is blocking access to sewers. Derek Tenney, who oversees maintenance, said there have been times when he must remove a bunch of trash or debris just to operate.
“We need to get the pump fixed, so you need to do whatever you need to get it fixed,” Moore said. “We can move (homeowners’) stuff.”
In other business, the board approved collaborating with the church and set the dates for the annual town garage sale for June 19 and 20, and the town clean-up will be the following weekend, June 26 through 27. It also approved Sue Charlton’s request to use the town hall May 25 for the Memorial Day Parade.
The board reminded the town that the Department of Transportation will not be installing a traffic light at the intersection of Prairie Street and Ind. 15 because the traffic count on Prairie Street is too low. No burning of anything is allowed at anytime, and there is no parking on any street from 3 to 5 a.m. every day.
The next meeting is scheduled for May 11 at 6:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
