Learn More Center Receives $12,500 from Dollar General Foundation

Director of Education Cynthia Johnson stated, “This grant is definitely a blessing to Wabash County. The monies will allow us to serve more adults and help them receive their high school equivalency diplomas, improve their work skills, and transition to college.”
The mission of the Learn More Center is to provide educational services and a learning community to meet the instructional needs related to workforce readiness, adult basic education and literacy – including high school equivalency diploma attainment and post-secondary skills – for adult learners in Wabash County and surrounding areas. “We strengthen and advance a prosperous Northeast Indiana through supporting every person’s ability to read, attain desired levels of education and provide for literate, healthy families,” according to the press release.
“At Dollar General, we are passionate about our mission of serving others throughout the communities we serve,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “It’s exciting to see the Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s outreach in action as we partner with organizations to further education and literacy and make a real difference in people’s lives.”
For over a decade, the programs of the Learn More Center have helped Northeast Indiana adults acquire basic skills in reading, math and language and hone those skills for job performance.
The press release states, “We offer adult basic education programs in our North Manchester and Wabash locations, including basic literacy skills classes and individual tutoring, high school equivalency preparation for Indiana's change in 2014 to the Test Assessing Secondary Completion, post-secondary transition, and English as a second language assistance. The Learn More Center offers programs to assist students to hone needed job skills such as math, English and computers. The Learn More Center makes it easier for adults to succeed by offering features such as a non-traditional setting, individualized self-paced curriculum, and extended hours. Using our programs, students reach their educational goals which open doors to employment opportunities.”
Since inception, the Learn More Center has helped over 303 students attain their GED. Additionally, in 2013 it logged over 6,300 instructional hours and 1,022 volunteer tutoring hours with 13,520 student hours.
