LCA Offers Classes Online

WINONA LAKE - Lakeland Christian Academy is branching out to offer classes online.

LCA is a private, Christian School for students in grades 7 to 12. Located at 1093 S. CR 250E, Winona Lake, the school offers courses biblically based that meet Indiana state standards.[[In-content Ad]]Now, students can be LCA students, without leaving home, through the Web site at www.lcacougars.com

Joy Lavender, LCA administrator and principal, said the online program is designed for three purposes.

First, she said, the program will provide additional courses for the school's students that LCA may not be able to offer otherwise because of the school size.

Secondly, LCA has many children of missionaries and pastors, and the children have to travel with their parents often for months or even years. Through the online courses, the students can continue on tract to receive an LCA diploma.

Third, Lavender said, it is LCA's hope to reach some homeschooled students. If they take courses online, then they have the opportunity to be involved in other LCA programs like sports teams or clubs.

All classes that will be offered online will meet the Indiana requirements for graduation, Lavender said. If a student takes online courses full time, they still have to meet LCA's requirements for graduation.

Development Director Lori Widman said sometimes a parent may not have all the resources to teach their children a particular subject at home. Through the LCA online courses, the homeschooled child can take that subject while maintaining a homeschool atmosphere.

Lavender said a group of teachers will provide the online courses. An administrator will oversee all students, and teachers will teach in their respective subject areas.

Students can plot out their own course and decide how long a course can be. A student may decide to finish a course in a couple of months, or stretch it out to a year.

Lavender said all online students will have the right to communicate with the teacher of a course through e-mail.

What is important about the LCA online courses for LCA, Lavender said, is that the classes all will be from a Biblical worldview.

"We just look at it as a great opportunity," Lavender said.

"Kids just want to be on the computer," said Widman.

To take the courses online, Lavender said, students have to have Internet at home and media capabilities. LCA students can take the courses from the school's computer lab.

The online courses can be viewed now at www.lcacougars.com To view LCA's online course catalog as a guest, go to the log-on page on the Web site and type in lcaparent as the username and parent123 as the password.

The registration form is available on the Web site. To enroll, the registration form, a completed tuition contract and a $100 registration fee must be turned in.

Tuition to take the LCA courses online is the same as tuition to attend LCA. Full tuition is for students who take six or more classes. Tuition for the first child is $5,500; second child, $5,300; and the third or more child is $5,100. Cost per class up to the first five classes is $800 per class. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify.

As LCA is an accredited school, Lavender said, "This will give them a credible diploma." Full-time online students will walk at LCA's graduation once they complete the program.

"As far as I know, we are the only high school in the area that offers courses online," said Lavender.

Widman said LCA does offer Advanced Placement and some duel credit courses online.

Parents can go online now to register their students in the online courses.

"We're excited," said Widman. "This is just a nice way to reach out to students we weren't reaching."
