NORTH MANCHESTER - Lawrence G. Stewart, 99, formerly of rural Roann, died at 8:48 p.m. Dec. 11, 2008, at Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester.

He was born Jan. 12, 1909, in Paw Paw Township, Wabash County, to Ernest A. and Maude Butler Stewart. On Jan. 12, 1929, he married Kendall Lucille Swygart, who died Feb. 9, 1995.

A retired farmer, he was a member of Roann Christian Church, Roann. He graduated from Urbana High School in 1927. He was an avid fan of I.U., Purdue, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds and St. Louise Cardinals. He also loved harness racing.

Survivors include six grandchildren: John Schmalzried, North Manchester; Thomas Stewart, South Korea; Marci (and spouse Stewart) Hamilton, Fort Wayne; and Steve, Susan and James Ferrer, all of Indianapolis; and seven great-grandchildren: Justin Schmalzried, Natalie Stewart, Colton Stewart, Megan Stewart, Samuel Ferrer, Sydney Hamilton and Hannah Stewart. He was preceded in death by a son, Winston Stewart; two daughters, Joanne Ferrer and Peggy Schmalzried; a sister, Sarah Evelyn Stewart; a grandson, David Stewart; a granddaughter, Janet Schmalzried; and a great-grandson, Cameron Stewart.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, with Pastor Dan Binkley officiating. Burial will be in Laketon Cemetery.

Calling is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
