WINONA LAKE – It appeared Grace College's women's basketball team was headed toward a nailbiter against Northwestern Ohio with the score 53-48 with six minutes remaining.
But the 24th-ranked Lady Lancers ended the game on a 19-1 run, including 14 straight points, as they improved to 5-0 with a 72-49 win over the Racers in Hoops For Hope Tournament at the Orthopaedic Capital Center.
"This game was a game of spurts tonight," said Grace head coach Scott Blum. "We came out well and started to establish the post early, but to their credit they hung around. Fortunately we were able to get the last spurt and pulled away."
Neither team was able to generate much momentum in the first half due to poor shooting. Grace struggled to 13 of 36 shooting from the field (36.1 percent) but held the Racers in check by forcing them into 10 turnovers and 33.3 percent shooting.
The Lady Lancers managed to open up a 10-point lead with a 10-3 spurt midway through the half, but the Racers (0-3) recovered to enter the half down 31-25.
Grace sprinted out of the locker room to score 12 of the game’s next 13 points, half of which came from Danielle Boykin, as the Lady Lancers opened up a 43-26 lead.
Northwestern Ohio made its comeback to close the margin to five points, but that’s when the Lady Lancers blew the game wide open.
The Racers could only score one point the final six and a half minutes of regulation, and the Lady Lancers secured their fifth win of the season – all of which have been by a double-digit margin.
"They ouworked us in the first half, so we made it a point to come out in the second half and beat them in rebounds which we did," said Blum. "We started to be more aggressive in our press breaker, which helped push the lead up as well. Now we need to get some rest and bounce back for a tough game (today)."
Boykin led all players with 20 points in 24 minutes of action. She hit 8 of 14 shots and also nabbed three steals.
Hannah Lengel directed Grace’s offense most of the night and finished with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists, and Kiera Gray finished with 15 points and four boards.
Jayla Starks did her part to stuff the stat sheet with 11 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. She hit all seven of her free throw attempts and only turned the ball over twice.
Overall, Grace’s 41.7 percent shooting night was aided greatly by hitting half of its shots (12 of 24) in the second half.
The Lady Lancers held a plus-9 advantage in turnovers and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds on the night.
Grace will face its stiffest test of the season today at 3 p.m. when it plays No. 8 Concordia University.
Amanda Francis led the Racers in scoring with 10 points, while Kelsey Burton added eight points and nine rebounds and Shaye Warman finished with eight points and four rebounds.
