He was born April 16, 1946, in Warsaw, to Harold and Thelma McClone Gates. On March 11, 1989, in Warsaw, he married Terrie E. Beron, who survives.
A lifetime Kosciusko County resident, he entered the U.S. Army Jan. 17, 1966, in Indianapolis. He was an engine and power train repairman. SP5 Larry Lee Gates was honorably discharged Jan. 16, 1968, in Fort Hood, Texas. He was a polisher at Zimmer Inc. for 15 years, retiring in 2008.
He graduated from Mentone High School in 1964. His collection of tools helped him enjoy rebuilding old cars and motorcycles (which he enjoyed riding). He attended Nappanee Missionary Church, where his love of Christ and his faith led him to be there for family and friends - always putting others first.
Also surviving are two daughters, Sara (and spouse Eric) Schumacher, Columbus, Ohio, and Michelle (and Ell) Arnett, Claypool; a son, Eric Gates, Fort Wayne; six grandchildren: Ethan, Evan, Meranda, Mariah, Maddie and Jake; two brothers, Ron (and spouse Mary) Gates, Warsaw, and Harold Duane (and spouse Dana) Gates, Bourbon. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Nappanee Missionary Church, 70417 Ind. 19, with Pastor Jim Wisler officiating. A private graveside service will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with military honors by members of Warsaw’s American Legion Post 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126.
