Wawasee quarterback Kory Lantz was named winner of the 2004 Phil M. Eskew Mental Attitude Award in class 4A football. The recipient of the award, who was nominated by his principal Ellen Stevens and coach Joe Rietveld, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. The award is named in honor of the third commissioner of the IHSAA, who served from 1962 to 1979 and oversaw the beginning of the state football tournament.

Lantz ends his high school football career with more than 5,000 yards passing and 2,061 passing yards in his senior campaign with 17 touchdowns to 11 interceptions.

Off the field, Lantz ranks 14th in his class of 226. He's a member of the National Honor Society, and while he remains undecided on his college choice, he plans on majoring in exercise science.

"I don't really understand the whole thing yet," said Lantz of the award after Saturday's game. "I'm really honored that I got this award and I'm glad that Coach Rietveld nominated me."

Lantz is the son of Cindi and Mark Lantz of Milford and is the second player from Wawasee to claim the award. Brad Traviolia won the award for the Warriors in 1985 after a 37-3 loss to Roncalli.

Farm Bureau Insurance presented a $1,000 scholarship to Wawasee High School in Lantz's name. [[In-content Ad]]
