WINONA LAKE, IN - The Grace College volleyball team can't say it didn't have its chances against Cornerstone University Tuesday at Lancer Gymnasium in the season opener.

Grace controlled the lead in both the second and third games but floundered down the stretch and got swept by a strong Golden Eagles squad 15-6, 15-10, 15-10. The win moved Cornerstone to 5-1 on the season.

"They are a very good team," Grace coach Candace Moats said. "Their setter was just everywhere."

After sophomore Jamie Gill served five consecutive points in the second set, Grace led 7-1. Cornerstone began to chip away at the lead and eventually tied the game at 9-9. Still tied at 10-10, the Golden Eagles scored the final five points to win 15-10.

In the third set, Grace led 8-4, but a seven-point run from Cornerstone proved to be difficult to overcome as the Golden Eagles closed out the match in impressive fashion.

Moats could not come up for an answer as to why her team could not put away Cornerstone when the opportunity presented itself.

"I don't know the answer to that," Moats said. "I don't think they're giving up, and I don't think they're cruising."

With the loss, Moats had the chance to find out more of what her team's strengths and weaknesses are - things that can't be seen when you practice against teammates for weeks at a time.

"There were things that exposed themselves tonight," Moats said.

"There are things that we need to continue working on, like quickness to the ball and quickness with our feet."

Sophomore Mandy Ringhand was a positive for the Lancers. She led the team with 15 kills and 13 digs. She also added three blocks.

"Mandy has really stepped up," Moats said. "I was proud of her tonight. She had a lot of great hits tonight, and she's gotten better on defense, too."

Grace (0-1) will play in the Cedarville Invitational Friday and Saturday.
