MARION – In a tough, gritty clash between a pair of men’s basketball teams ranked in the NAIA top 10, Grace struggled on the offensive end in a 66-56 loss at No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan.
The 10th-ranked Lancers (4-2; 1-1 Crossroads League) committed 19 turnovers and shot just 36 percent from the field in defeat.
Grace fell behind early before scoring eight straight points to take a 16-13 lead.
Neither team shot particularly well in the first half as both squads were less than 39 percent from the field and less than 15 percent from the arc, and it was the Wildcats (8-1; 2-0 CL) who took a small advantage into halftime, leading 32-28.
Bruce Grimm Jr. paced Grace’s offense in the first half with 12 points and two assists.
Grace quickly evened the score with the first four points of the second half before the Wildcats responded with seven unanswered to open up a seven-point edge.
The back-and-forth affair continued as the Lancers scored seven in a row knot the score at 39-all.
Grace only managed three points over the next five minutes of play as Indiana Wesleyan took the lead for good.
A three-pointer from Elliot Smith cut IWU’s lead to 50-48 with 5:38 to play, but the Wildcats won the game from the free throw line. Indiana Wesleyan made 11 free throws over the final 4:14 of play to pull away for their 10-point win.
Grimm led all players with 22 points, including a 9-of-12 performance from the free throw line. Smith scored 12 points and hit a pair of three-pointers, and Greg Miller tallied nine points and 11 rebounds.
Overall, Grace made only 18 of its 50 field goal attempts, including just 3 of 18 (17 percent) from the arc.
The Lancers will look to bounce back on Saturday with a home game against league opponent Huntington University at 3 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
