Lakeview Students Skype With Pen Pals In Taiwan

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Students in Dr. Shu-Chun Tseng’s Mandarin Chinese class at Lakeview Middle School conversed with their pen pals from National Chao Chou Senior High School in Taiwan Friday morning through Skype.
Tseng said the objective was just a cultural exchange. The Lakeview students got the opportunity to talk to native Chinese speakers, and the students from Taiwan got to practice their English. Both groups of students also learned how they are similar and what makes them different.
It is the second year Warsaw students have had a pen pal project with students from National Chao Chou Senior High School.
Tseng organized the Skype project with the English teacher, Ting-Yi Tsai.
The activity Friday started with students from both schools introducing themselves. The Taiwan students spoke in English, and the Lakeview students spoke in Chinese to the best of their ability.
Tseng said she hopes to keep the project going with the Taiwan school. This summer, she is going back to Taiwan to meet the teacher face to face and develop a better project between the schools. There is about a 12-hour time difference, which affects live communication between the two schools.
On Skype, students asked each other about their favorite colors, music, food and activities. One Taiwan student sang Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” to the Lakeview students after they got engaged in a conversation about karaoke. Lakeview eighth-grader Aurora Rosas sang Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” back to them.
“I enjoy it,” student Katelynn Wirebaugh said of the Skype experience. “I am able to see people from Taiwan on here.”
“I think it’s really cool to meet with our pen pals around the world,” said Cody Schmucker, who sang a little bit of “Amazing Grace” to the Taiwan students.
He said the Skype experience will help them “by getting to know their culture and stuff and how they act and stuff.”[[In-content Ad]]

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are for people over the age of 70.5 years old. Unlike other distributions, which are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow for a tax-free distribution from an IRA, provided that the distribution goes directly to a qualified charity.
