Lakes Symphony Performs Sunday
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
WINONA LAKE - "Symphony of the Lakes just trips off the tongue, especially in this area," said Dr. Patrick Kavanaugh about the renamed symphony orchestra.
The new name better represents the region because of the number of lakes here. Kavanaugh, who initially pushed for the name which emulates the great orchestra in Poland, didn't realize how many music lovers and supporters there are in all parts of the county.
"A number of people came by and, in effect, said the name 'Warsaw' Symphony Orchestra may alienate strong supporters," the conductor said.
And so the switch was made this summer.
Symphony of the Lakes is devoted to bringing the highest artistic standards of great music to the Kosciusko County.
The orchestra performs at 7:30 p.m. in Rodeheaver Auditorium Sunday, guests of the Fellowship of Christian Artists Second Sunday series.
The program has everything, chronologically, Kavanaugh said, from Beethoven's Symphony No. 6. to a "fantastic orchestral arrangement" of Beatles tunes called "All You Need Is Love."
Pianist Jane Glover-McInnis is guest soloist. In May, Glover-McInnis performed during the dedication concert of the Glover Pavilion in Warsaw's Central Park. Her father, Richard, donated funds for the new structure.
The wind was so strong that day the musicians weighed their music stands with sand bags and secured sheet music with clothes pins.
Glover-McInnis performed just one movement of Ernst Bloch's "Concerto Grosso," instead of four as the wind whipped in from the west.
"We've assured Jane that we won't even have a window open during her performance," Kavanaugh said.
The 50-member orchestra will be on the move this year, too. The second performance, Nov. 18, will be in the Warsaw Community High School Performing Arts Center with tenor Don Bernardini as guest soloist.
Admission to the orchestra is free.
"We're not even taking a collection," Kavanaugh said. "We just want everyone to come, bring the kids and enjoy themselves."
