By Staff Report-

People who attend the Kosciusko County Lakes Festival will learn more about the county's lakes.

The festival is June 27 at Central Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is sponsored by Kosciusko Lakes and Streams and the Tippecanoe Watershed Foundation.

The festival is also part of the Northern Indiana Lakes Festival.[[In-content Ad]]The festival will feature a huge boat show, ski demonstration by Lake City Skiers, eco-tours by canoe around Center Lake and other family-oriented fun.

"Our lakes provide recreation opportunities that are unique," said Matt Sandy, Area Plan Commission assistant planner. "These recreation opportunities are often looked at by companies when they are looking for a location."

Bev Ganshorn, Kosciusko County Board of Realtors president and Pier 13 Realty owner, said there are many activities the lakes have to offer.

Examples are bass tournaments, snowmobiling, sailboat races, ice fishing, water skiing and wakeboarding.

"The lakes draw in vacationers as well as summer residents thus quadrupling the populations in many of the areas," Ganshorn said.

She said the influx of people generates revenue throughout the county.

Ganshorn said the lakes are continually being cared for as well, which makes a difference to residents and non-residents.

"It is extremely important to lake property owners as well as our visiting guests to keep the lakes as pristine as possible," Ganshorn said. "Lake residents make considerable efforts to keep the lakes clean by giving financially to their lake associations."

She said the associations then use some of the funds to take water samples for testing to keep water quality high.

Ganshorn said as years pass, she sees more and more cottages turning into full-time homes as the values on the lakes continue to rise.
