Lakes Center to Host Cherry Creek Interpretive Hike
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
By Staff Report-
Luke Hunt, a certified naturalist in Indiana, will be the hiking guide. Hunt is a retired secondary science educator from Whitko Community Schools and a volunteer with the center.
“What better way to learn about our local streams than to visit and observe one?” Nate Bosch, center director, said in the center’s announcement of the event. “Very few people in northern Indiana know as much about our natural resources as Luke. His passion for our local lakes, streams, forests and prairies is contagious.”
Hikers will learn how the stream functions as part of the forest ecosystem as they walk the trail along the stream. Other natural features along the trail will be noted.
Hikers will learn to identify trees based on characteristics of their bark and explore how trees spread their seeds. Birds will be identified, their nests will be studied and some of their fall migration habits will be described.
The hike will be a non-strenuous walk suitable for participants of all ages and fitness levels.
Participants should meet at the Heritage Trail parking lot at the end of Boys City Drive. The hike is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 11 a.m.
The Center for Lakes & Streams at Grace College conducts research, provides resources, engages and educates residents and collaborates with local organizations in efforts to make the lakes and streams of Kosciusko County cleaner. Find more information at lakes.grace.edu
