Lakeland Art Association is hosting a 10th anniversary art exhibit at 116 S. Buffalo St., Warsaw beginning May 28.
The association obtained a gallery space in 1993 at 109 N. Lake St. on the west side of the courthouse. The group took over an unused county building and began presenting regular displays featuring local and regional artists.
A grand opening for the Lakeland Art Center was held July 9 and 10, 1993, with Lila O'Connell serving as director.
The LAA held their meetings in the building and sponsored workshops and classes for adults and children.
In addition to regular exhibits the center offered showcase items for purchase. Each year members have mounted a juried spring show and sale and a member bazaar showcase and sale.
The first Lakeland Art Center displayed the paintings of Betty Appenzeller.
It was a sweet deal for the art group. Their only financial obligation were monthly utility bills.
In February 1999 Lakeland Art Association board of directors received a notice of eviction from the county. The government had plans to expand the Justice Building to encompass the entire city block. The center and several other buildings would be demolished.
The search for a new space was on.
By July arrangements were made for the group to lease 116 S. Buffalo St., Suite A, the former Beam and Beam Men's Clothing Store.
Owned by Jerry Opperrud and Cindy Dobbins, the warm-colored wood panels were made bright with track lighting. Costs of operation increased to $600 per month.
O'Connell retired in 1999, and the directorship passed to Linda Dilling, Bonnie Gore and, just recently, to Melodie Koher.
The center's 10th anniversary exhibit with feature the work of the late Betty Appenzeller, along with Tom Wellman, Lynne Diamente, Joan Moore, Sarah Creason, Lila O'Connell, Ann Fahl, Andy Tomasik, Bev Garner, Wayne Harshberger, Darlene Blackburn and DiAnne Smith.
A reception is set for June 1 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The public is invited.
Exhibit hours are 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. There is no admission cost. [[In-content Ad]]
