The Lake City Skiers show ski team is hosting the Central Region Show Ski Tournament on Hidden Lake, behind Smith Tire, Ind. 15, Warsaw.
According to Show Director Kevin Hayes, it all begins at 8 a.m. Saturday with individuals. Team competition starts at noon with half of the field of eight performing their shows. Sunday, the other four teams will perform beginning at 8 a.m. Each team presents approximately a one-hour show. Awards will be presented about an hour after the last team has given its show.
Along with the Lake City Skiers, Indiana’s only team in the competition, the other teams scheduled to compete include: Silver Lake and SprayMasters, both from Michigan; Chippewa Lake, Ohio; Wonder Lake, Ski Broncs, Backwater Gamblers and Arch Rivals, all from Illinois.
This weekend’s tournament is a qualifier for nationals. Division II teams will compete at nationals in Tomahawk, Wis., while Division I teams will compete in Rock Island, Ill. Lake City Skiers is a Division II team.
“This tournament will probably bring in about 800 participants (to Warsaw),” Hayes said, along with several hundred spectators over the course of the weekend.
Financially, the tournament could bring in “conservatively” $500,000 to $800,000 to the community, in terms of hotel rooms, dining and other expenditures, he said.
“We rotate hosting the tournament every third year. We started doing that about 12 years ago, and this is our fourth one,” Hayes said.
Though all the teams are good friends, he said the tournament is “very competitive.”
“We’re the best region in the nation because we all get along, but when it comes to competition, it’s still competitive,” he indicated.
The tournament is free to the public to attend. There will be a barbecue food truck on hand, as well as all kinds of drinks and snacks for people to purchase.
As for the LCS’s show, the team is doing their own version of “Footloose” this year.
“It’s kind of like the movie. It has a lot of aspects of the movie,” Hayes said.
He said it features lots of high-flying ski jumping, pyramids, ballet lines and more.
“We have some of our previous skiers back, which is going to bring a lot of difficulty to the show. We are upping the air chair. We have two guys doing the air chair this year. A lot more tricks this year,” Hayes stated.
Due to flooding conditions this year, Hayes said the team has only been on the water about seven times so far as of Tuesday.
Show announcer is Angela Wilson. Ben Rankin is playing lead male character Ren, while Rachel Jungbauer is lead female character Ariel. Keaton Patrick is Ren’s new best friend Willard, while Corynne Lindsey is Ariel’s best friend Rusty.
Jungbauer is in her ninth year with the LCS.
“Basically, we’re just doing a rendition, not a spoof, of the movie,” she said. “Ren and I have a connection my dad doesn’t approve of. ... We try to stay as true to the movie as we can.”
Audiences first get a glimpse of Ariel when Jungbauer comes out on the swivel ski. “That’s when Ren first notices her,” Jungbauer said.
She said she’s definitely nervous for the tournament this weekend, but she’s nervous for every tournament and she enjoys water skiing.
“I like the variety of it. There’s always room for new and exciting acts you can make up on your own,” she said.
Rankin is in his eighth season with the team. He not only plays Ren, but he and Caleb Patrick also are assistant show directors and co-wrote the script for the show.
“We watched the first movie and then the second one. We decided how we wanted it to go. Instead of trying to make dancing legal, we decided we would be trying to keep skiing legal,” Rankin stated.
“We always try to put new stuff in there, but the acts and the amount of people we have really ties in with what we do,” he continued.
Only able to get four performances in this season so far because of the flooding, Rankin said he’s just going to wait and see what happens this weekend at tournament.
“We’re second on the water Saturday. Just come out and watch. Support the local team and see what the other teams have to offer. There’s going to be lots of talent people don’t get to see very often,” Rankin concluded.
Patrick, 16, has been with the show ski team “since I was born,” he said. However, this year’s show is the first time he’s had a hand in writing the script.
“I enjoy the sport and I felt like I could help out,” he said.
He liked the newer “Footloose” over the 1984 original, he said.
“It was easy to write to. It’s not the same as the movie. We just used the basic plot. We skipped a lot,” Patrick indicated.
For him, the highlight is the return of many former team members this week. He said they bring back a lot of memories, and they’re really good.
“We also have a ton of newcomers that just joined last year and they’re moving through the ranks pretty fast,” Patrick said.
Though the high waters kept the team from practicing much, he said the tournament this weekend should be interesting.
“Come check it out! It’s free!” he concluded.
Hayes thanked the team sponsors, including Clark’s Marine and Evinrude, as well as the hotels for hosting tournament participants and spectators, including Holiday Inn Express and Comfort Inn among others.
Regular LCS shows are at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and 6 p.m. Sundays on Hidden Lake. For more information on the ski team or tournament, visit the website at www.lakecityskiers.org[[In-content Ad]]
