Valley pitching gave up 20 hits, including six for extra bases, but its defense didn’t help the cause much, committing five errors and having at least three more plays where communication may have resulted in an out.
After making the last out of the first inning at the plate, the Lady Wildcats opened the second frame with four straight singles and a three-run double by Reannon Hopkins, the No. 8 hitter. Hopkins was thrown out trying to advance to third after a throw home for the first out of the inning.
With two outs, Haley Yohe beat out a single, the second of five Whitko hits to not leave the infield, Hanna Yohe tripled to left-center when outfielders collided, and scored on Ellie Snep’s double.
The top of the third opened with two Whitko hitters reaching on errors, sandwiched around a groundout. Two walks and five hits later it was 14-0.
Whitko sent 26 hitters to the plate in the first three innings to Tippecanoe Valley’s nine, and the Lady Wildcats left at least two runners on base in each inning except the first.
The visitor’s seven-run fifth inning was capped by freshman Snep’s first career varsity homer, a two-run shot to straightaway centerfield up in the wind.
Lady Wildcat head coach Michelle Garr said it was important for her team to stay focused once the game’s outcome was secure. She also used her bench extensively in the last two innings, and those players were productive. Emily Jones drew an RBI walk, Anna Ousley singled and drove in two runs, and Shelby Martin reached base twice.
“I was proud of the girls for staying in the game mentally,” she said. “Sometimes with games like this your mind can kind of wander. But I was impressed with everyone. We had six subs come in and we liked what we saw from them. It’s just really nice to see.”
Garr was also pleased with Snep’s work in the pitcher’s circle. She pitched all five innings, giving up two singles to Valley leadoff hitter Katie Gunter, struck out three and didn’t walk a hitter.
“Ellie did a nice job for us,” Garr said. “We wanted her to keep the ball low and she did that very well and avoided giving up walks. It was a good performance.”
In the Valley dugout, it would be easy for the Lady Vikings to grow frustrated after committing 11 errors in their second game Saturday (a tournament loss to Wabash). Lady Viking coach Daryl Shoemaker said his team pitches to contact, making it necessary to limit mental mistakes.
“Errors happen,” he said. “I’ve been telling them all year that physical errors will happen. You’ll make an error or two every now and then.
“But when you start stacking those up as a team, runs start to stack up. Today was a perfect example of that: in the two innings that we didn’t allow runs, we maybe had one error, it couldn’t stack up.
“The other innings we just had miscues. Things like missing our cut-offs and allowing runners to advance. It’s a cycle. It was defense tonight, all the way. We’ll have to work on it.”
Whitko moved to 7-2 on the year and 2-0 in the TRC. The Lady Wildcats will host Huntington North today. Valley (6-7, 0-2 TRC) is also back at it today, hosting Pioneer.
