Lady Warriors Drop NLC Game To Goshen

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

SYRACUSE – Things started off well enough for Wawasee’s girls basketball team, outscoring Goshen 10-5 in the first quarter of Friday night’s Northern Lakes Conference game.
But then came the drought.
The Lady Warriors went from about the 1:30 mark of the first quarter until the 6:27 point of the third period, scoring only a pair of free throws over an 11-minute stretch. The dry spell was the difference in Goshen’s 45-38 win in the NLC opener for both teams.
The visitors employed different defensive strategies, going with a 2-3 zone in the first quarter to a 1-2-2 zone in the second, then a box-and-one designed to keep Wawasee’s Kylee Rostochak from shooting her team back into the game.
“They did a good job off keeping us off-balance,” said Lady Warrior head coach Kem Zolman. “In the first quarter, (Goshen) did pretty much what we thought they’d do after we scouted them, and they kids did a great job. We’re up 10-5,” Zolman said. “Now they make a change, and that’s when our youthfulness stands out; you’re not sure where your shots are going to come from. We got caught looking at the trap, and the change hurt us. Then we couldn’t get into the flow of anything.
“When they switched to the box-and-one, that’s something we hadn’t seen before, and that’s a lot of respect for Kylee. Kylee was rushing, trying to make it all happen, and when she rushes, she’s not that good for us. Once we gave her some talks, got her back to where she needs to be as a player, she responded so well, and did some really nice things for us.”
When Wawasee’s offense did get cranked up a little bit, Goshen was able to hold off the Lady Warriors with long possessions and offensive rebounding. Eighteen of Goshen’s 25 team rebounds came off the offensive glass. Goshen’s largest lead came with less than three minutes to play, 40-25, and the Lady Warriors worked to erase the deficit, but could get no closer than six the rest of the way.
Lady Warrior junior Kaitlyn Kennedy stepped up after halftime, scoring seven of her nine points after intermission and tying for the team-high with six rebounds.
“(Kennedy) did a really nice job. She’s been with us for the last two years, and now to see her have a game like this is really good for us, and I’m probably more happy for her, to see it start to sink in a little bit, and maybe we can catapult from that,” Zolman said.
Both teams played aggressively on defense, with the officials calling at least a dozen jump balls over the course of the game. Zolman said it’s important to learn what conference play is all about.
“It’s just learning who we’re going to go with. We played a bunch of people again tonight, and we’re getting closer to where we want to be,” he said.
“Both teams were getting after it, with players diving on the floor for loose balls, deflecting passes, making it hard to shoot, and that’s what the NLC is like, every time out.”
Rostochak finished with 20 points on the evening to lead all scorers. Aubrey Schmeltz had three points, with Elizabeth Jackson, Allissa Flores and Seaquinn Bright scoring two points each for the Lady Warriors. Goshen (5-3) was led by Aylissa Trosper with 16 points, while Olivia Love added 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Warriors, now 3-5, have a quick turnaround, playing at South Bend Adams at 2:30 p.m. today. Wawasee returns to NLC play at 7:45 p.m. Dec. 20 when they visit the Tiger Den to take on Warsaw.
