Lady Vikings Win Semistate!

Brouyette, Secrest lead Valley to 60-45 win over rival Rochester
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Playing in front of a sellout crowd, Tippecanoe Valley continued its history-making run through the postseason with a 60-45 win over Three Rivers Conference rival and neighbor Rochester in the Class 3A girls basketball semistate game at Warsaw’s Tiger Den Saturday night.
Meredith Brouyette scored the game’s first points, allowing Valley to lead the game wire-to-wire. Before Saturday she had scored a total of 16 points in her last five games. She tied Anne Secrest for game-high honors with 16 in the win.
Valley head coach Chris Kindig said he could tell Brouyette was ready to go during pregame activities.
“She’s always confident, even when she wasn’t scoring, she was doing other stuff for us. Obviously, she’s a big reason why we’re here,” he said.
“I told here before the game ‘you know what, Meredith? I think you’re going to have a big game today.’ And she responded ‘coach, I’m ready.’ And you know what? She was.”
Brouyette confirmed the conversation. “He talked about how everyone has stepped up and had a huge game in the tournament, but it was someone different every time,” she said. “Yesterday at practice coach told me ‘you know, I think it might be your turn.’ So this morning I went to the gym and shot the ball and felt pretty good about it.
“Then when the game started, I wasn’t thinking about it when I shot it. I just shot the ball like I know how to do, and it turned out pretty good.”
While Valley was able to make 56 percent of its shots, the Lady Vikings’ defensive effort gave the Rochester offense fits. The Lady Zebras made only 12 of 48 shots from the field.
“Defensively, we played awfully, awfully well.” Kindig said. We did a nice job on (Alexa) Holland, and I thought we did a pretty good job on (Becky) Malchow. (Ali) Larkin got a few looks. I think in the tournament she’d been knocking down a lot of shots, and she struggled a little bit from the field today, but we had a great defensive effort.”
The Zebras stayed in the game, in large part, thanks to 21 valley turnovers, 19 coming in the first three quarters. Valley was also in foul trouble the entire game, sending Rochester into the bonus before the end of the first quarter. Midway through the fourth quarter, Valley had four players on the floor with four fouls each.
“We talked about (turnovers) at half, that maybe we just needed to make one or two more passes, and not try to rush things too much. I thought we did a better job with the ball in the second half,” Kindig said.
Rochester failed to take full advantage of its opportunities from the free throw line, hitting only 7 of 12 in the first half and going 19 of 30 overall.
Valley led by 14 at the midway point of the second quarter, and carried a 28-17 lead into halftime. Rochester trimmed deficit to five early in the fourth quarter.
On Valley’s next two trips down the floor, however, Taylor Trippiedi, who finished with 14 points, hit a shot underneath the basket while being knocked to the floor. Brouyette then hit the last of her three treys, and Valley never looked back.
“We worked super-hard at practice this week,” Trippiedi said. “We got a lot of shooting in and worked on our defense, so I definitely had confidence in my teammates that we could do it tonight.”
Secrest, Valley’s top scorer and rebounder, picked up her fourth foul and sat down with 6:22 left in the fourth quarter and the Vikings leading by 10. By the time she returned about two minutes later, Secrest’s teammates had expanded the lead to 17.
While the Vikings would rather play with Secrest than without, her teammates can and do carry on when she needs to sit down, according to Kindig.
“That was kind of the same thing we saw against Muncie Central (a 50-41 win in the regional semifinal). Anne fouled out in overtime, with about 2-1/2 minutes to go, and everybody else picked it up a notch or two,” he said.
“From that standpoint, I think the girls are very confident. We’ve played that way the whole tournament, and hopefully we’ll play that way next week.”
With the win, Valley improved to 25-2 overall, 9-0 over TRC opponents, and 2-0 in the Tiger Den this season.
Next up for the Lady Vikings is a date with fourth-ranked Princeton (29-1) at 6 p.m. at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
