At the 48th Annual TCU Bi-County Tournament at LaVille High School, the second-ranked Oregon-Davis Lady Bobcats dispatched Culver 69-42 Thursday, followed by the 10th-ranked Triton Lady Trojans’ 56-50 win over LaVille in the second semifinal of the night.
Losing eight of their last 10 meetings against O-D, Triton’s latest setback was a 65-55 loss Jan. 2 in Bourbon.
In that loss, Triton (13-4) led 32-31 early in the second half, but the Lady Bobcats (15-3) used an 11-0 run to give them the cushion they needed.
This time around, Triton coach Adam Heckaman hopes to limit O-D’s scoring spurts.
“O-D's good,” Heckaman said. “They have kids that can play. They have kids that can step up and score. We've got to be ready to play. We played them alright the first time. We're just going to have to find out what we can do Saturday night.”
The championship game will be played at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, and will be Triton’s first Bi-County title game since rejoining the tournament four years ago.
“That's obviously a big game,” Heckaman said of the title tilt. “The Bi-County championship. We haven't been there since I've been the coach here, since we joined the Bi-County. It's a big step for us.”
Before reaching the title game, Triton first had to dispatch the LaVille Lady Lancers (9-8) on their home court.
And while Triton did get the win, it didn’t do it with the ease Heckaman would have liked to have seen.
Shooting 34 percent from the field, the Lady Trojans made just 7 of 27 three-point attempts.
“We just missed some shots we're typically able to make,” Heckaman said. “We settled for too many shots on the outside and let them hang around.”
Junior Taylor Hatfield had the best offensive performance, making 7 of 13 field goal attempts, scoring 20 points.
“Taylor's shot came around tonight,” Heckaman said. “She'd been struggling with her outside shot, but she was able to knock some down tonight, which I think was big for us, especially with Kylie struggling from the field.”
Donning a No. 34 jersey instead of her normal No. 22, Mason did make just 2 of 12 field goals, scoring six points, but she did get four assists, the same as senior Breanna Lemler and sophomore Krystal Sellers.
Triton also got 13 points, six rebounds and five steals from senior Shana Anderson.
Lemler’s 10 rebounds helped the Lady Trojans match the taller Lady Lancers’ 40 boards.
LaVille’s 5-10 junior Kelsey Gurtner finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while fellow 5-10 junior Hannah Herbster had 16 points and eight rebounds.
Many of the duo’s points came deep in the post, which could have been a problem for Triton, but the Lady Lancers began going to them a little too late in the game.
“We're small,” Heckaman said. “We know it. We have to be able to turn teams over a little bit. We weren't able to do that a whole lot tonight, to the extent that I would have liked, but we were able to battle with them on the boards.”
