FORT WAYNE — After replacing nine seniors and bringing in a new coach, the Warsaw girls soccer team seems to have found its identity.
Following Monday night’s 2-0 win over Fort Wayne Snider at IPFW’s Hefner Fields, the Lady Tigers (7-2-2) have won their last five games and haven’t suffered a loss in their last seven.
Along with staying out of the loss column, the Lady Tigers have kept opponents out of the scoring column, posting six-straight shutouts.
“With this being my first year here, at the beginning of the year we were kind of trying to figure out what pieces should go where,” Warsaw coach Peter Lucht said about the team’s 2-2 start. “A lot of that has been finding the right fit for each girl – where they’re going to be able to best impact the team and impact our chance to win.
“They’ve really put it together well,” he added. “They’ve worked hard as a team and stayed focused. They’ve been blessed and rewarded.”
With the defense being stingy, the Lady Tigers have then benefitted from the scoring prowess of junior Brooklyn Jackson and sophomore Elizabeth VanWormer.
Against the Snider Lady Panthers (6-5-2), that trend continued.
First, Jackson shot high on a direct kick from about eight yards outside in the 18 with 17:56 remaining in the half, getting over the head of Snider senior Rosemary Snyder and into the net.
“I thought we’d have an opportunity to finish from distance tonight, and we did,” Lucht said.
He thought they’d have a chance to score from the outside based on the height of Snyder, which worked against her again when VanWormer scored with 11:22 remaining by shooting from outside the 18, and letting the ball curve to the top of the net.
“After Brooklyn’s first kick, I let the girls know it didn’t only have to be from a free kick that we could take advantage,” Lucht said. “We had the opportunity and Liz converted.”
The two-goal lead gave Warsaw all the cushion it needed, as senior goalkeeper Abby Schue posted six saves, but none of them were too challenging.
The negative for Warsaw occurred with just 2:32 remaining, when freshman defender Breck Jackson went to the ground while battling for possession.
Already wearing a knee brace, she was helped off the field, then rode a golf cart with her parents to the parking lot after the game.
She was able to put some weight on the knee, so the extent of the injury is unknown, but Lucht can only hope it’s not too long.
“She’s had a very solid season, especially as a freshman stepping in to play the center back role,” Lucht said. “That has to be a little bit rare, but we pair her with another freshman with Rachel McClelland on the other side. Breck is a very valuable asset and our thoughts and prayers go toward her.”
Warsaw will attempt to win its sixth-straight contest Thursday at Manchester.
