Lady Tigers Still Unbeaten

Warsaw improves to 15-0 with 57-44 win over Goshen

Very few times this season has Warsaw’s varsity girls basketball team been challenged.
When they were Saturday night, the Class 4A No. 10 Lady Tigers responded in a big way, as they pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Northern Lakes Conference foe Goshen 57-44.
With Warsaw leading 42-29 after three quarters of play, the Lady Redskins closed the gap with a 7-0 run to start the fourth.
The Lady Tigers, however, responded with a 7-0 spurt of their own and improved to 15-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
“I was very pleased with the way we responded when they cut it to six,” said Warsaw coach Michelle Harter, whose team has won 17-straight regular season games and 19 of its last 20 dating back to last season.
“The girls did what we needed to do,” added Harter. “We got refocused and executed the game plan.”
As a result, the Lady Tigers took another step toward a conference championship, as well as their first undefeated regular season since the 1989-90 season.
“I told the girls to enjoy being 15-0, but we can’t forget what got us here,” said Harter. “We’re going to get after it in practice, and we’re going to continue to get better. We have to remember what got us here. We still have to focus on doing the little things. We have a tough stretch coming up, and we can’t overlook any team.”
Elkhart Memorial and Plymouth are 3-1 in the NLC standings, while Goshen, Northridge and NorthWood are all 2-2 and Concord and Wawasee are 0-4.
After an out-of-conference battle at Penn (13-3) Wednesday night, the Lady Tigers play at Concord Saturday, at Elkhart Memorial on Jan. 22 and at NorthWood on Jan. 26 before hosting South Bend Riley in the regular-season finale on Jan. 31.
“This stretch we have coming up is going to be difficult,” said Harter. “We play some quality teams in the next few weeks. Any time you go on the road, it’s tough. It’s always difficult, no matter who you play.”
Warsaw certainly made it difficult for the visiting Lady Redskins, who fell to 10-4 on the season.
Goshen finished the game just 16 of 49 (33 percent) from the field overall, 6 of 20 from the arc, and 6 of 16 at the free throw line.
The Lady Tigers, on the other hand, shot a little better, making 18 of 43 (42 percent) attempts overall, 6 of 16 from the arc, and 15 of 22 at the charity stripe.
Junior Nikki Grose tallied 14 points and seven rebounds for Warsaw, while senior Lindsay Baker added 14 points and six assists and senior Jennifer Walker-Crawford chipped in with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
“It’s nice that we’ve gotten consistent scoring from those three all season, but we also had some other people step up tonight, and that was nice to see,” said Harter.
Junior Eryn Leek and senior Melanie Holladay finished with six points each for the Lady Tigers, who led 18-10 after one quarter of play and 32-22 at halftime.
Leek proved to be very efficient from the arc, making the only two shots she took, while Holladay added five rebounds and three steals.
Senior Sarah Ray and junior Brooklyn Harrison rounded out Warsaw’s scoring with three points each.
Junior Deja Felder led Goshen with 14 points and nine rebounds, while classmate Aimee Swihart also scored 14 points.
