Lady Tigers Off To Quick Start

First-year Warsaw Community High School varsity girls basketball coach Michelle Harter continues to put her stamp on the program.

And with her team playing tenacious defense, which led to a pretty effective transition offense, the Lady Tigers signed, sealed and delivered a 61-37 win over Kosciusko County rival Tippecanoe Valley Friday night.[[In-content Ad]]Warsaw raced out to a 19-0 first-quarter lead over the visiting Vikings and never looked back, leading by as much as 27 in the second quarter, 28 in the third quarter and 31 in the fourth quarter.

After their quick start in the first quarter, the Lady Tigers opened the second stanza with a 10-0 run, pushing their already commanding lead to 27 at 29-2

"We talked this week about coming out quick and playing intense defensively," said Harter, whose team held Valley scoreless for the first 6:47 of the game. "I thought if we came out and pressured the ball we could get some turnovers. We wanted our defense to create some offense."

Warsaw's defense certainly created some offense, as the Lady Vikings turned the ball over seven times in the first quarter and 17 times in the game.

The Lady Tigers turned those turnovers into 16 points.

"Warsaw got a quick run on us," said Valley coach Gary Teel, whose Vikings fell to 0-3 on the season. "It was 5-0 after the first two shots of the game, and then a couple breakaway lay ups and it was 9-0. And then it was 13-0 and 17-0 and 19-0. At that point, our kids just lost their confidence."

The 24-point win upped the Lady Tigers' all-time record against Valley to 41-3.

"Some of it was playing Warsaw," said Teel. "The kids were confident coming in, and the Warsaw got off to that quick start, and it just destroyed the kids' confidence. We started playing tentatively. I am proud of the kids for the way they played in the second half. They played hard and with heart. We went toe-to-toe with Warsaw in the second half."

The Lady Tigers led 31-8 at halftime and 49-21 after three quarters of play.

Warsaw is off to its first 2-0 start since opening the 2002-2003 season with eight-straight wins.

"It's going to be very exciting to watch this team as the season goes on," Harter said of her Lady Tigers. "You never know who is going to step up and score. There's so many girls on this team that can step up and score. This team is a lot of fun, and I'm having a great time. I can chew on them and they respond and do what i ask them to do. They all get along great."

Twelve players got minutes for the Lady Tigers, with eight of them scoring at least two points.

Kelci Freds led the way for Warsaw with a game-high 17 points, while Alex Glenn added 14 points, Kayla Stout and Kaelee Sands chipped in with eight points each and Liz Tat finished with six points.

For Tippecanoe Valley, Hannah Boggs led the way with nine points, while Whitney Sparkman contributed seven points and seven rebounds. Stacie Hoffman and Melody Hoffer scored six points each for the Lady Vikings.

Warsaw is in action again tonight at Crown Point, while Valley will host its annual tournament Nov. 29.

The Lady Vikings will play Munster, while Fort Wayne Elmhurst and Knox will clash in the other semifinal.

Valley and Warsaw will clash in the Tiger Den Wednesday in the season opener for boys basketball.
