Lady Tigers Hold Off Wolves

Warsaw’s varsity girls basketball team outscored Michigan City 19-3 in the second quarter to take a 22-point lead into halftime of Saturday’s game in the Tiger Den.
Every coach on the upper end of a large kead encourages their team to not let up, as the other team is capable of the same kind of run.
Sure enough, the visiting Lady Wolves came up with an exact 19-3 quarter of its own in the third period. Early in the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers’ lead was down to four, but they maintained their poise, steadied themselves, re-expanded the lead and closed out a 50-36 win.
In the second quarter, Pam Miller scored 10 of her 12 points, and Dayton Groninger hit 5 of 6 free throws to help stake Warsaw to a very comfortable 34-12 halftime score.
“At halftime, I talked about how you have to come out with the same intensity, continue to play under control, and not allow them to get back in the game,” said Warsaw coach Michelle Harter. “We did none of that in the third quarter. We got quiet, we rushed our offense, instead of being patient and getting reversals. So I said ‘this is a learning point for us.’ We have to understand you can’t let up. They can have the kind of second half like we had in the first half.”
While the Warsaw defense was focused on Michigan City guard and University of Arizona signee Michal Miller, who scored all nine of the Lady Wolves’ points in the opening quarter. She only scored three more points the rest of the way, however.
Instead, it was Raven Wood who got crazy hot, hitting all six of her shots in the third quarter, including four three-pointers, scoring 16 of Michigan City’s 19 in the period. Wood’s shooting inspired the Michigan City 2-3 zone defense, which harassed Warsaw into nine turnovers in the quarter.
But after the 6:30 mark in the fourth quarter, Warsaw effectively controlled the game.
“What I was really proud of was we could have folded when the lead got down to (four), we continued to battle, we slowed ourselves down, got looks at the high post, and we finally did what we’d practiced all week,” said Harter.
Harter said she asked her upperclassmen to step up in an intense situation.
“During a timeout I told them ‘girls, we have to have some leadership. Who’s going to step up for us?’ Erin (Clemens) and Jodie (Carlson) both stepped up big for us, and that’s exactly what you want from your senior group.”
Carlson expanded the lead from four to seven when she swished a three-pointer from a couple of steps to the left of the key, then was fouled and sank two free throws on the next trip down the floor. Carlson finished with seven points.
Clemens pulled down a pair of offensive and three defensive rebounds during the deciding stretch of the final quarter; each defensive rebound limited Michigan City to one shot on the trip down the floor. She tied sophomore Page Desenberg for game-high rebounding honors with nine.
Once the lead was restored, Warsaw secured the victory with free throws. The Lady Tigers were just 2 of 4 from the field during the fourth quarter, but went 8 of 14 from the line.
“I think Jodie hitting that three helped everybody relax, and Erin played great defense, and we’re like ‘oh, we’re OK. We’re going to be patient, and get good looks.’
“I told them we didn’t need to attack their zone. I told them ‘if they’re going to stand back in their zone, just pull the ball out. We’re in the lead, we’re in control, and once they come out to us, then we can attack, because that’ll open some things up.’ It’s all part of the learning process.”
The next chapter in the learning process takes place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when the 4-3 Lady Tigers visit Wabash.
