After competing in two tournaments last week, the 12th-ranked Warsaw girls golf team opened its dual play season Monday at Stonehenge Golf Club.
Kicking off their home schedule against Columbia City, the Warsaw Lady Tigers claimed a dominating 184-224 victory.
"They're trying to work their way around the golf course and see what they can do," Warsaw coach Chris LaLonde said. "They can do it. It's just about feeling comfortable with it right now."
Warsaw juniors Nikki LaLonde and Elizabeth Meadows each shot a 44, followed by sophomore Alexis Manwaring’s 47 and a 49 out of seniors Morgan Sands and Ashley Murrell.
"The majority of them didn't play that much this summer, so they're getting their touch back and a feel for the greens," Chris LaLonde said of her team, which didn't post a birdy. "The greens were slow at first, but as it got warmer, the quicker they got."
The Lady Tigers are fresh off a season in which they won their own sectional at Stonehenge, before qualifying for the state tournament.
However, Sarah Hartle graduated from that squad, and senior Megan Dearlove and junior Nikki Grose each decided to concentrate on other endeavours instead of playing golf.
With three girls gone from last year's team,  LaLonde is working with some new faces, but feels they want to match what the 2011 team did.
"I think they have a chance," she said. "They want to, and that's a big hurdle to get over. They're willing to practice and keep trying. The regional has added a couple of teams coming in, so it will be a little tougher, but they'll still give it a good try."
Her daughter, Nikki, has taken over the No. 1 role for the departed Hartle, but LaLonde also knows she'll need some seniors to step up.
"Ashley's still new to it, being a senior but this is only her second year," she said about Murrell. "She's getting there. She has a competitiveness in her. Morgan is also a good leader. She has good spirit. It's just going to be a good team effort."
Warsaw plays in its third tournament of the young season Thursday, traveling to Angola's Lake James Golf Club for the Fremont Invitational.
