Lady Tigers Fall In Tournament Final

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

The Warsaw Lady Tigers were well aware of the stature of South Bend St. Joseph coming into the championship game of the TCU Lady Tiger Classic Tuesday night.
The Lady Indians came in as the No. 2 ranked team in Class 3A, averaging 72 points per game and a 32-point average margin of victory.
According to Warsaw head coach Michelle Harter, the Lady Tigers came in somewhat intimidated. Combined with a fast start by St. Joe, the home team spent the night playing from behind in a 65-40 loss.
“We talked about (being intimidated) in the locker room after the game. ‘Girls, you come out and respect all, but fear none.’ I told them they could look me in the eye and tell me ‘no coach, we didn’t,’” Harter said. “But I could see it on their faces and I knew exactly what they were thinking; ‘oh, they’re so good.’ And they are a good team. But we did play scared tonight, and you could see that. We played back on our heels, we were a little intimidated, and just allowed them to do what they wanted offensively.
“Defensively they were pressuring us, and when we finally relaxed we got some good looks, but by that time we’d dug ourselves a big hole.”
The hole started off with St. Joseph leading 7-1 in the first two minutes, and pulling away to a 22-7 lead by the end of the quarter. The visitors forced five Warsaw first-quarter turnovers, and converted them into nine points.
By the end of the third quarter, the Lady Indians enjoyed a 28-2 advantage on points off of turnovers.
After being down 43-19 at halftime, Warsaw was going to need to make a run right away to get back into the game. Instead, St. Joe opened the second half with a 10-0 run to remove the last bit of hope for the Lady Tigers.
Lady Indian senior Michelle Weaver led the well-balanced St. Joe attack with a game-high 20 points. Classmate Madeline Rastor had 16 points, and sophomore Daly Sullivan had 13.
Harter said her team might have been more focused on who was on the floor rather than playing their type of defense fundamentally well. But she was happy that her team, once hope of a comeback was gone, didn’t merely go through the motions the remainder of the game.
“I think at times, whether we were in our zone or in our man (defense) we were so concerned about where Rastor was or where Weaver was that we simply forgot to play good, fundamental defense, and that allowed them to get some easy looks,” she said.
“I was very pleased with the girls. We got down big and they continued to battle. Offensively we finally started to do some good things. We got some nice looks, got some attacks, got to the free throw line. Our defense just didn’t step up like we had in the past.”
Warsaw senior Vicki Harris, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Lady Tigers with eight points. Erin Clemens had seven points, and Page Desenberg added six for Warsaw.
Joining Harris on the all-tournament team were St. Joe teammates Weaver, Rastor and Sullivan, Perry Meridian’s Brianna Adams, and Lowell’s Hunter Jusevitch. Weaver was named the tournament’s MVP.
In the semifinal game, Lowell was tied with the Lady Tigers at 35-35 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter. From there, Warsaw went on a 17-2 run en route to a 58-42 win.
Harris, Madi Graham and Dayton Groninger led Warsaw with 12 points each, and Pam Miller added nine in the winning effort.
Now 7-6 on the season, Warsaw will play at Triton Friday night and host LaPorte Saturday night.
