Lady Tigers Crush Culver

Jackson scores four goals in Warsaw's 7-0 win

The natural assumption, said first-year Warsaw girls soccer coach Peter Lucht, is to assume there may be a bit of a setback, or that the cupboard might be a little bare.
That’s simply not the case for the Lady Tigers.
Despite a new coach with a new system, and the graduation of nine seniors from last year’s sectional championship team, including prolific scorer Meredith Hollar, Warsaw  opened the season with a 7-0 win over the visiting Culver Community Lady Cavaliers Monday evening.
“From the beginning, back at our call-out meeting, I set the bar high,” said Lucht, who played soccer as a senior at Warsaw and then Grace College. “There might be the natural assumption that, with almost an entire starting unit graduating, that there would be a step back this year. That’s not the case with us. There are opportunities there and we have some girls stepping up.”
Among those girls stepping up are junior Brooklyn Jackson and sophomore Elizabeth VanWormer.
In Monday’s dominating win over Culver, Jackson scored four goals and assisted on two others, while VanWormer tallied two goals and an assist for the Lady Tigers.
“We have a number of dynamic players on this team,” said Lucht, who was previously the boys soccer coach at Wawasee High School. “You can definitely start with No. 8 (Jackson) and No. 10 (VanWormer. We have great decision makers in our midfield.”
Junior Danielle Hutcherson scored the Lady Tigers’ other goal and also had two assists, while junior Pam Miller had one assist.
Senior Abby Schue, Warsaw’s standout senior goalie, made five saves and was hardly tested in the contest.
“Abby is a great keeper,” said Lucht. “She leads by example. It was great to see her out there being vocal.”
Behind two goals from Jackson and one from VanWormer, the Lady Tigers led 3-0 at halftime.
Warsaw blew the game wide open with a trio of goals in the first five minutes of the second half.
The Lady Tigers finished the game with 21 shots, 13 of which were on goal.
Warsaw is scheduled to play in the Snider Invitational Saturday, and will then open Northern Lakes Conference action Aug. 27 when it hosts Plymouth.
