Knotted in a scoreles tie at Warsaw Tuesday night, the Goshen Lady Redskins scored 43 seconds into the second half and once again five minutes later en rout to a 2-1 Northern Lakes Conference victory.
“The difference was, we just came out in the second half and got a couple quick ones,” Goshen coach Dan Graber said. “That really helped us relax a little bit, and we relaxed a little bit too much there at the end and they got a goal.”
Warsaw senior Gabby Monroy did score with 1:48 remaining in the game off an assist from sophomore Brooklyn Jackson, but it was too little, too late.
All night, Goshen showed it’s talent and speed, finding ways to get quality chances on a Warsaw defense that had a school record 13 shutouts last season and began this year with three straight.
However, in its last three games, the Lady Tigers’ defense has given up five goals.
“Defensively, we're have a little bit of difficulty containing,” Warsaw coach Dan Miller said. “We're trying to institute a new system, and there's a little confusion as they shift. Without getting too technical, we're just having trouble figuring out which players to pick up.”
Goshen’s first goal was scored by freshman Jelitza Palomino, who converted a putback on a missed shot by junior Amira Kupty, which bounced off the chest of Warsaw junior goalkeeper Abby Schue.
“We just had a breakdown,” Miller said. “On the first goal, we broke down at midfield. Abby made a great save, but we weren't marking at the back post. She made a great initial save, but then the back post was open.”
Palomino found herself at the right spot once again in the 46th minute, when she had a wide open net off a cross from junior Miranda Kay, converting the easy goal and putting Warsaw in a 2-0 hole.
“We had a problem containing,” Miller said. “We were trying to be so high-pressure, that we overcommitted a lot of times. “
Warsaw actually had some great chances later in the half, but Goshen sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Oyer denied each one, helping her team get the needed NLC victory.
“This is one of the stronger teams I've coached here at Goshen,” Graber said. “We have eight seniors on this team, seven of which start. We know we have a strong team. A strong core that's been together for a long time. So, we were expecting a run at an NLC title. We knew today we had to get this win. The NLC is so competitive and there's probably five teams that can make a run at it.”
And Miller also knew how important a win over Goshen would have been.
“There's a lot of difficult games (in the conference),” he said. “Games like this, particularly on our home field, are ones that we're disappointed to let points slip away. A tie would have been difficult. We really needed to win. I wanted to protect home field. It puts us in a difficult spot — conference wise. We're not out of it, but we have to go to Concord and win, not tie. And we have to go to Northridge and win.”
Making the road even tougher is the loss of senior Meredith Hollar.
After missing her entire junior season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus, Hollar returned this season with eight goals in four games.
However, in that fourth game against Plymouth on Aug. 21, the girl with 50 career goals, suffered another injury to the same knee.
Just 11 goals short of Ashley Kitchen’s school-record 61, Hollar is still seeking opinions from doctors, but her return doesn’t seem too imminent.
“The goal right now, for her and us, is to hopefully have her back by sectionals,” Miller said. “We'll just see. If we can get a couple games in before sectionals, that'd be great. But we're definitely not going to rush her back.”
