WABASH – Manchester High School girls basketball coach Mark Underwood couldn’t have asked for much more than his team’s performance Tuesday night.
The Lady Squires’ skipper had plenty to be pleased about in his team’s sectional opener against Lews-Cass.
Improving to 7-14 on the season, Manchester jumped out to an 8-0 lead on the Lady Kings (4-17) and didn’t look back en route to a 49-23 win.
Junior Tabby DeWitt and senior Kayla Flack led an impressive inside game by the Lady Squires.
DeWitt recorded a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Flack added 13 points and six rebounds.
Senior Autumn Brewer wasn’t far behind, finishing with eight points and nine boards.
Up top, senior guard Kalene Freshour was 4 of 6 from the field for nine points to go with five assists and four steals, while senior guard Bekah Brunn ended with six points and three assists.
“It was great to get everyone involved,” Underwood said. “This was a total team win.
“Kayla did have another strong night, as she was patient … working the ball around to her teammates early,” he added. “Tabby and Kaylene each played one of their best games of the season, too.”
The Lady Squires upped their quick start to a 14-2 advantage after one quarter of play and 24-5 score at the half.
Lewis-Cass did battle back in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 31-13, but the Lady Squires came back with a 12-2 run of their own.
Lewis-Cass was led by eight points and five rebounds from senior forward Breanne Robertson. Junior guard Maci Maupin added seven points, three rebounds, two blocked shots, three assists and four steals.
With the win, Manchester advanced to a sectional semifinal against North Miami Friday at 6 p.m. at Wabash High School.
The Lady Squires topped the Lady Warriors 62-56 in North Manchester in early January.
“We need to get back to work and have two good practices now to get ready for (North Miami),” Underwood said. “I’m sure they will be ready to go when Friday gets here. It was a close-knit game the last time, and I’d expect more of the same this time around.”
