WABASH – Manchester High School’s run at a Class 2A girls basketball sectional title continued with a strong team effort  Friday night.
The Lady Squires, improving to 8-14 overall, jumped out to a 10-2 lead and didn’t look back en route to a 54-41 win over Three Rivers Conference rival North Miami.
“We’d been telling the girls all along that they needed to be ready to go when they are called,” Manchester coach Mark Underwood said. “You’ve got to credit (North Miami) for stopping Kayla (Flack)’s shot attempts, but Autumn (Brewer) and Sydney (Snepp) among many stepped up.
“It’s great to have nine players scoring for us,” he added.
The Lady Warriors, closing the season with a 4-17 record, did surge back in the second half. Trailing by as many as 16 at one point, North Miami clawed back to as close as 10 but couldn’t get any closer.
“We had good looks outside, but the shots just weren’t falling,” North Miami head coach Ryan DiMien said. “I’m very proud though of how we improved through the season. Our seniors were a credit to that.”
After the quick beginning for the Lady Squires, North Miami, despite having the same troubles scoring on the east-end basket at Wabash High School as Lewis Cass did in Tuesday’s sectional quarterfinal, battled back to trim the margin to 22-17 at the half.
Manchester got hot again to open the third quarter, scoring 15 of the second half’s first 19 points.
The inside duo of senior Autumn Brewer and junior Sydney Snepp led Manchester.
Brewer tallied 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Snepp also chipped in 11 points and pulled down five boards.
North Miami was led by Lindsay Vincent and Tiffany Huffman, with Vincent scoring 14 points and Huffman adding 10.
The win moves Manchester High School into tonight’s 7:30 p.m. championship game against the host Wabash Lady Apaches.
Wabash held off Northfield 36-29 in a defensive battle in Friday’s second semifinal game.
