The Lady Squires took an early 16-8 lead in the first game, but the home team rattled off 12 of the next 16 points to tie the game at 20. From that point, the teams were never separated by more than five points.
“It was a rough start,” said Whitko head coach Jamie Stidham. “If we had started off stronger we probably would have pulled off the victory.
“It was a big victory in itself to come back from 0-2 and almost win. I can’t complain about that.”
After Manchester took a 16-11 lead in the second set, Whitko rallied to tie the game at 17. The set would see five more ties before the Lady Squires scored the last three points to win.
The Lady Wildcats won nine of the last 13 points to take Game 3 and stay in the match. In the fourth set, the teams were within two points of each other until Whitko broke the tie at 22 with the final three points to win the game and tie the match.
After seeing a two-set lead disappear, Manchester head coach Rebekah Haynes talked to her team about maintaining its poise.
“We were kinda hoping it wouldn’t take that long, too,” she said. “That goes back to us needing to learn how to put away teams in three (games).
“In between games, I just talked about how it’s anybody’s game. It doesn’t matter; we won the first two and we know we’re capable of it, and we always play our best volleyball when we’re calm.
“Seeing as how we’re a young team again this year, I’m proud of them for being able to mentally keep calm when we’re under pressure. To pull off a win in five (games) is something we’ve struggled with in the past. So I’m very proud of my team.”
The Lady Squires appeared to finally put away Whitko when they led 13-8 and needed two more points to win. Whitko had one more rally and held off three match points before Manchester won.
Stidham said, “they never quit. We proved that the other night at Churubusco when we pulled off the five-set win, and it was close tonight.
“We have a lot of heart and determination in this team right now.”
Manchester was led by senior Kendra Binkley with 16 kills and four service aces, while junior Cierra Carter added 14 kills. Corrie Osborne had 22 assists on the night.
Whitko junior Haley Yohe had 30 assists, and classmate Kaity Reed added 20 digs and 19 kills. Emily Hughes and Brianna Tackett contributed 15 and eight digs, respectively.
Whitko will play in Saturday’s Westview Invitational in Topeka. Manchester will host its own tournament on Saturday.
