NORTH MANCHESTER — Members of the Manchester girls basketball team brought out each of their favorite teachers prior to Wednesday night's home game against Peru, but once the ball tipped off, it was the players teaching a lesson in attacking the basket.
In the non-conference encounter with the Peru Lady Tigers (5-9), the Manchester Lady Squires (11-3) connected on 20 of 35 shots (57 percent) to get the 48-36 victory, their fourth-straight.
"We just made huge strides tonight," Manchester coach Mark Underwood said. "We struggled against North Miami (in a 58-49 overtime win Saturday), because they played a 2-3 zone and we hadn't seen much of that this year, and we lacked aggressiveness against it. As a result, we didn't get to the foul line very much, we didn't get any inside shots. We just settled for perimeter stuff. Tonight, we had the goal of going inside. As a result, it got the other team in foul trouble."
The aggressiveness worked by getting one of Peru's top players, senior Emily Renfrow, in early foul trouble as she picked up two in the first two minutes of the game.
By the end of the first half, which saw Manchester in front 25-18, the Lady Squires didn't only have Emily Renfrow in foul trouble, but her younger sister, junior Shalyn Renfrow, as well with three fouls each.
With the Renfrows struggling to stay on the floor, Manchester built a 22-10 second-quarter lead, but Peru junior MaKinsey Honn came off the bench to score her team's next eight points in two minutes, cutting the deficit to 23-18 before Manchester senior Kaylee Watson hit a shot at the halftime buzzer.
In the second half, Peru continued to come on strong, pulling within 27-24, prompting Underwood to call a timeout.
"The message was, 'Let's just buckle down. Let's focus. Let's try to do the things we know we have to do on the defensive end, because if we can get stops, they can't get any closer,'" Underwood said. "That was the message I put out there."
Back on the court, Manchester used an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to regain a comfortable lead at 34-24 with 3:54 remaining in the third quarter.
Along with getting their game back on track, Manchester also got Shalyn Renfrow to foul out, finishing her night with six points, six rebounds and four steals in less than three quarters.
Down a player, the Lady Tigers crept within 36-30 early in the fourth, but another 8-0 Lady Squires run, sparked by senior Lindsey Budnik, dashed any hopes of a road win.
In the final quarter, Budnik had six points, two rebounds and two steals, propelling Underwood to point her out, although singling out individual players isn't something he's accustomed to.
"I thought the whole team played well, but I was really pleased with the way Lindsey Budnik came off the bench in the second half," he said. "She really gave us a boost, both offensively and defensively, and rebounding. I think she did all three well."
In all, 10 Lady Squires scored in the win, led by senior Kayla Flack's 16.
"We're getting better," Underwood said. "Our depth is starting to surface. We've got some players stepping up and doing the job now, that maybe earlier weren't."
That depth will come in handy Saturday at home against Wabash, a team Manchester has lost to 13-straight times, including its 44-21 loss on Dec. 30 at the Wabash County Tournament, when the Lady Squires shot 13 percent.
"We're looking forward to that game because we want to see how we've improved," Underwood said. "The whole goal is to just keep working hard and improving the whole year. We want to see if we have improved. A good way to gauge improvement is to see how you can compete against a team that you played earlier in the year.
"We're hoping for good things in that game," he added. "I feel very confident about my kids and the way they're playing right now. We respect Wabash to know we're going to have to put together a good game that night to come out victorious. But I feel it can happen."
