Lady Lancers Spike Rival Goshen

WINONA LAKE – Grace College’s offensive attack wore down Goshen College as the Lady Lancers won Saturday afternoon’s volleyball match in four sets.
The Christina LeBlanc-led offense placed three Lady Lancers (9-4; 4-1 Crossroads League) in double-digit kills to help Grace recover from an early deficit.
The Maple Leafs (5-10; 1-5 CL) made a late push in the first half to take the lead and held on to win 25-23 to go ahead by a set.
The Lady Lancers stormed back, however, to lead 17-9 and force a Goshen timeout. Grace’s offense was too much for Goshen to handle as the Lady Lancers won 25-16. Grace tallied 11 kills with two errors in the second set, led by five kills from Stefanie Bolt.
Grace held an early lead in the third set only to see Goshen battle back to knot the score at 14-14. The Lady Lancers recovered to end the set on an 11-4 run to win by seven.
Grace led for much of the fourth set and clinched the match with a 25-19 win. The Lady Lancers were aided by three service aces in the fourth set.
Bolt led all players with 12 kills on a .308 percentage. She also recorded a match-high five block assists.
Hannah Clemmons stepped up offensively to produce 11 kills on a .233 percentage, and Arielle Walters had 10 kills (.318) to go along with three block assists.
Bethany Whitcraft (18 digs) was one of four Lady Lancers to reach double-digit digs. Clemmons and Calah Kruse tallied 11 digs, and LeBlanc recorded 10 digs in addition to her 39 assists.
As a team, Grace had seven service aces in the match. Kruse and LeBlanc each aced twice for Grace.
Grace's defense held the Maple Leafs to a .103 hitting percentage as a team.
The Lady Lancers will welcome Marian University to the Orthopaedic Capital Center on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
MARION – Grace’s women’s soccer team wrapped up its nonleague schedule with a 4-0 victory over Missouri Baptist on Saturday.
The Lady Lancers (7-1-1) outshot Missouri Baptist 24-3 and recorded their sixth shutout of the 2012 campaign. Grace ranks first in the NAIA with six shutouts.
“The women really turned it up a notch in this match. The technical prowess was very clean, and the finishing was outstanding,” said Grace head coach Michael Voss. “This was a complete team effort demonstrating clinical possession attacking futbol. I’m proud of the women for putting in back-to-back solid performances.”
In a match that was controlled in terms of possession by Grace, the Lady Lancers scored three of their goals within an 18-minute span in the first half.
Mallory Rondeau scored the first of her two goals at the 10:40 mark of the match. After beating a defender, Rondeau cut along the baseline and blasted in a goal at an extreme angle.
Nine minutes later, Rondeau added her second goal. Kristin Yocum pinpointed a pass in between two defenders to Rondeau in the penalty box, and Rondeau slotted home the ball in stride.
In the 28th minute, Carianne Sobey scored Grace’s third goal on a set piece. Grace earned a free kick from 30 yards out, and Sobey’s left-footed shot beat the Spartans’ (3-6) goalkeeper.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Grace wrapped up the scoring with a goal from Holly Bennett. Kelsey Christner curled in a corner kick in the 55th minute, which Bennett redirected in for a goal to the far post from eight yards.
Overall, Grace recorded 12 shots in each half while holding the Spartans to two shots in the opening period and one shot after halftime. Rondeau led all players with six shots and five shots on goal, and Bennett tallied five shots.
The Lady Lancers also held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Goalkeepers Abigail Burns and Carmen Barnhill teamed up for Grace’s shutout. Grace has yielded just four goals through the team’s first nine matches of 2012.
